Beautiful Alfa-Romeo Veloce Spider. 45,195 miles indicated.
Backdated chrome bumpers, Alfaholics GTA Veloce wheels, upgraded
cams, retrofitted Weber carbs. Beautiful color combination.
Fantastic two-seater that sings like an Italian is supposed to
sing. Every car guy should own an Italian car at some point, and
this very pretty 1982 Alfa-Romeo Veloce Spider is an inexpensive
way to get some Italian in your life. With just over 45,000 miles,
it's still in fantastic condition and has obviously been treated as
something special all its life. Recently, it has been treated to a
bit of a makeover using the chrome bumpers from an earlier model to
give it an all-new look (or should we say an older look). As a
result, it has the look its designers intended, a much cleaner
profile that eliminates that heavy, bulky look of the original
plastic bumpers. The handsome Ivory paint is a nice change from the
usual bright red or white you usually see on these cars, giving it
a subtle, sophisticated look. The styling by Pininfarina has aged
rather well, and it has a wonderful Italian look with lots of neat
details, including those flush-mounted door handles, the
traditional Alfa grille up front, and the lovely Alfa Romeo script
on the tail. With so few miles, it has never been fully apart but
the paint has been touched up here and there, but there's nothing
that stands out as needing attention. In fact, it looks fantastic!
Panel gaps are decent (on par with '80s Italian build quality), the
doors close with a nice solid sound, and there's a great shine to
the finish. This is a car you'll be proud to own. The brown
leatherette interior is holding up superbly, a testament to the
car's low mileage and excellent care over the past four decades. A
lovely wood-rimmed steering wheel is the highlight of the interior,
and in true Italian fashion, you sit a little closer than you'd
expect. Big, round Jaeger gauges cover the basics, with auxiliary
gauges in the middle. That funky shifter sticking out of the center
stack seems odd at first, but feels quite natural in operation, and
it snaps through the gears with precision. The stereo has been
upgraded, probably in the late '80s, to a Kenwood AM/FM/cassette
unit with speakers in the kick panels, but if you're listening to
the radio in your Italian roadster, you're doing it wrong.
Monogrammed floor mats protect what appear to be the original
carpets and the door panels are in amazing condition. The black
convertible top is in good condition and is likewise probably
original to the car, and it stows easily behind the seats with a
matching brown boot. There's also a good-sized trunk that's ideal
for road trips. The 2.0 liter DOHC inline-4 was originally fuel
injected to meet 1980s emissions standards, but the system was
complex and tough to service, so the entire setup was replaced by a
pair of side-draft Weber carburetors. Webers are the preferred
setup on these cars, and they perfectly complement the upgraded
cams making for improved performance and a spectacular soundtrack
all with less maintenance. The rest is standard Spider equipment,
although the later models benefited from a lot of upgrades that the
earlier cars did not, so this car represents the best of both
worlds. The 5-speed manual shifts cleanly, funky shifter
notwithstanding, and there's a limited slip rear end with 4.10
gears out back, so the car feels lively around town. You'll note
that it's quite clean underneath (nobody is using one of these as a
winter car), and all of the structural areas are totally solid. The
springs and shocks have been upgraded to sharpen the handling a bit
and 4-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment. The exhaust system
sounds heroic at full bore, and it sits on a set of 15-inch
Alfaholics Veloce GTA aluminum wheels with right-sized 195/60/15
performance radials all around. Documentation is extensive,
including original owner's manuals, a copy of the window sticker,
factory service manuals, marketing materials, and a few decades'
worth of service receipts. Italian cars are just special. They feel
different, as if they were built solely for the joy of driving.
This Alfa Romeo is proof that they don't have to be expensive, and
this wonderful little roadster delivers the same wonderful
experience as its more expensive counterparts. Find out why Italian
