For Sale: 1973 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1973 Ford Mustang Sportsroof

"Ford Mustang has been the top selling car in its class since 1965. Here are some reasons. Good looks.Mustang is sporty and sleek. Inside and out. Your choice of five models: Mach I, Sportsroof, Grande', Hardtop and Convertible. Great feeling. Your Mustang is a statement of personal style. It feels great, it looks great." From the 1973 Mustang brochure showing all options available in the various body styles.

For consignment, a 1973 Ford Mustang Sportsroof showing 20,748 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The Sportsroof profile is normally associated with the Mach I of the era, but was available on a more understated version of the Mustang that lacked the specific Mach I features, and probably resulted in lower insurance premiums!

Exterior
Indigo Blue paint, here is two stage application, covers the top side of the car, giving way to dark blue lower panels that are delineated by a polished trim piece that blends with the wheel arch trim to create a continuous line. Along with the NACA ducted hood, this car features a few items that give it some Mach I intent and might cause a double take or two. First, a front spoiler that you find on the Mach's but is not depicted in the sales brochure, interestingly. Next is the rear wing, which was an option for the Sportsroof and Mach cars. The louvers on the rear window are an aftermarket add and reduced glare and sun penetration on the large rear compartment. Finally, this car is fitted with 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels which look fantastic and replace what would have been wheel covers for the '73. The only other option for the Mach I was aluminum slot wheels. Paint and trim look excellent on the car and we could find no glaring imperfections.

Interior
Woodgrain inserts highlight black molded plastic door panels complete with window cranks, integrated armrests, and carpeted lower panels. Tall buckets in black vinyl feature truck and roll textured inserts in a rather flat layout, mirrored in smaller scale on the rear 2+2 and all are in good condition. A wood rimmed steering wheel leads to a three gauge cluster up front, faced with black plastic showing a touch of patina while the center stage also reflects some age and houses three more gauges, an AM/FM radio with Bluetooth, and the vent levers. A clock fronts the center console where a Hurst shifter rises from the transmission tunnel also topped with a storage bin and armrest. Mach I embroidered mats top black carpet and a clean headliner is up above. The trunk is occupied by a speaker box and amps molded in cleanly.

Drivetrain
A clean engine bay houses the 351ci Cleveland V8 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor on top. It's mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission that routes power to the Ford 9" rear axle. Ford Motorsport valve covers and Ford blue paint highlight the clean powerplant. A newer wiring harness is on the car according to our consignor.

Undercarriage
Very clean underneath with dry conditions and minimal surface rust. Headers being the exhaust process and FlowMaster mufflers quiet the roar, while chrome tips expel the spent gas. Power brakes are supplied, disc in front and drums in the back while suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The 351 comes to life and emits a nice exhaust note as we grab the Hurst T-handle with confidence and send this sleek Mustang onto the test loop. The car has decent power and straight tracking and visibility is good considering the rear configuration. We note the tachometer and reverse lights are not working but all other functions on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Sportsroofs were the most uncommon Mustang model in '73 with just 10,820 produced. Even the convertible was produced in higher numbers and more than three times that number were Mach I's. So, it's no wonder we don't see them come up for sale that often. This is a very nice example that might have people scratching their head, asking why you removed the Mach I designation. But you'll know with confidence, (and a Marti report, if you order one), that this is a more "rare" Mustang from 1973!
