Produced in numerous variants over its production run between 2004 and 2014, the Lamborghini Gallardo offered similar looks and performance to its V12 stablemates with sharper handling thanks to its shorter wheelbase and lesser weight. Introduced in 2003, filled in a hole left by the discontinuation of the Jalpa in 1988. When Volkswagen Auto Group took over the company from Megatech in 1998, their engineers found the Calà - a concept built by Italdesign in 1995 - and used it as the basis for the Gallardo.
Instead of their traditional V12 or the Jalpa's V8, Lamborghini developed a 5.0L V10 producing 493hp for the car, which was offered with a gated six-speed manual or their automated 'E-gear' transmission along with all wheel drive. A suitably luxurious hand-crafted leather interior ensured buyers were plenty comfortable as they rocketed to 62mph in 4.2 seconds. While the new car was met with plenty of excitement, the company made several adjustments for the 2006 model year based on response from owners. Power was increased to 513hp, gear ratios were adjusted to improve acceleration, the suspension was revised, and the exhaust was altered for a sportier sound. Overall, the improvements took the car from 'very good' to 'exceptional' - it is no wonder the Gallardo went on to be one of the company's biggest sales successes.
