With its clean Cameo White paint ornamented by a sizable Screaming
Chicken emblem on its hood, arguably the most recognizable decal in
modern history, this 1981 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM SE is a true
flagbearer for early '80s muscle car style. The paint represents
its original color scheme when it debuted more than 40 years ago
and is in great shape, showing nice, even pigmentation and a
pleasing shine. Take a lap around the car and you'll see that the
contrasting black elements, including the front grille and
lettering on the sides of the fenders, still show their original
coloring, with no signs of UV damage to be found. A set of
staggered 20" Boss wheels that feature beefy 275 series tires in
back adds the perfect finishing touch to this low-slung cruiser's
curb appeal.
The interior has been updated while keeping the theme of tastefully
high-impact aesthetics intact. You'll find a pair of Recaro bucket
seats in place, wearing two-tone, black and red covers that tie in
perfectly with the expanse of matching carpet lining the floor. The
dash area sports an instrument panel with a striking,
machine-turned finish, and inside that panel, you'll find a
collection of fully functional gauges. Just below, a Kenwood AM/FM
stereo with Bluetooth connectivity sits in place of the original
radio, standing by to tend to your audio requests.
A closer look at this Pontiac's hood scoop will reveal the power
that lurks beneath, in the form of a 468-cubic-inch V8 at the
center of a well-maintained engine bay. Fed by a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor sitting on top of a Weiand intake manifold, it's a
potent engine that gives a fitting nod to a time when this model
was often equipped with expansive V8s, a practice that ended about
a half decade before this Firebird rolled out. Exhaling into long
tube headers leading out to a pair of Flowmaster mufflers, the big
block pairs with a 3-speed automatic TH400 transmission that's
fittingly navigated via a B&M ratchet shifter inside the
cockpit. A pair of added electric fans combines with a sizable
aluminum radiator to keep temperatures down in more demanding
driving conditions. Power disc brakes at all four corners bring
this classic to a stop in nothing flat, and with a new brake
booster and master cylinder in place, they're operating in top
form.
