For Sale: 1950 Buick Super in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1950 Buick Super Series 50 Riviera 4 Door Sedan

"The 1950 Buick Super Sedan, one of the most popular of all Buicks is the spirited Sedan, made extra handsome and extra roomy by its graceful afterdeck rear end design. Blessed with extra special touches for added comfort and convenience, for safety and pleasure, too." From the 1950 brochure.

For consignment, a 1950 Buick Super Series 50 Riviera 4 door sedan with a title verified 38,982 actual miles. This car was restored about eight years ago and is a fine representative of Buick's incredible line of cars, all with a family likeness, in 1950.

Exterior
The most prominent feature in this and all the cars in the 1950 Buick line is the grille and front bumper, a massive, protruding, gaping array of chrome bars and vertical tusks that create a stylish and somewhat aggressive front end that has cattle shaking in their hooves. From there, the long hood rises over flat topped fenders and takes a trio of ventiports with it while the fender becomes the body line that lifts to form the rear fender. Allendale Green is the color here, one of an astounding seven different greens available in 1950 and it adorns the 15-inch steel wheels dressed up with beauty rings and Buick hubcaps. Diminutive tail lights ride the massive rear of the car with a dome shaped decklid behind a sporty 3 part rear window. Paint, trim, chrome, and emblems on the car are nice with imperfections limited to a few bubbles and lifted paint in the curve, and some uneven filler.

Interior
Gray cloth inserts hover over stitch patterned black vinyl door panels under body colored window sills and all four present as clean and handsome. Black and gray is used on the front and rear bench seats showing no signs of wear and the rear passengers are afforded ample space, a pull down armrest, and robe loops. In front, a black and chrome clad steering wheel provides a classy handle and leads to a beautiful dashboard, backed by two tone body color but augmented with lots of polished metal, especially in the middle where an AM radio resides, and it's all in show quality condition. Black carpet floods the floor perfectly, the headliner is in very good condition, and the massive luggage compartment is finished in houndstooth cloth and houses a spare white wall.

Drivetrain
The hood opens sideways and reveals the 263ci inline eight cylinder with FIREBALL expressed in bright red on the sky blue valve cover. The engine was originally rated at 124 horsepower and is mated to a Dynaflow 2-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the 4.45 gears in back. The bay is clean and dramatic and we would have no problem opening up the hood and trunk at a car show!

Undercarriage
Nice and clean underneath with minimal surface rust and some slight residual oil on the pan and rear differential. A single exhaust threads the X-frame, runs through a stock style muffler, and exits out back through a steel pipe with decorative deflector. Drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with semi trailing arms included.

Drive-Ability
This nicely restored and clean Buick starts, idles, and rolls out smoothly, hitting our test loop with all the grace of a stately American luxury car. Looking out over the big hood, we point the nose straight and the car tracks well and rides softly over our less than perfect asphalt. Functionally, all available items work as intended and we return it to the mall for its temporary residence. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Despite its large size by today's standards, this was Buick's somewhat sportier four door in its line up, retaining a large and bulbous trunk that also kept it in the luxury realm, while the "Jetback" cars differed with their sloping tails. This is a very fine example, sure to be a hit at car shows and a welcome member into the Buick Club of America.
