For 1956, a two door version of the Customline was added to the
fleet at Ford, which pumped out nearly 370,000 units that year. As
the brochure pointed out, "whichever way you look at this new
Customline, you see beauty, distinguished, debonair, and desirable!
You see Customline's individuality in its gleaming, meshed grille,
recessed hood ornament, new wraparound parking lamps and
impressive, smart sweep of full wraparound windscreen."
For consignment, a 1956 Ford Customline Victoria 2 door hardtop
showing 64,378 miles, but the true miles are unknown. As one of the
most common and desirable cars of the mid-50's, rivaling even
Chevrolet's Tri-Fives, having a Ford that's just a bit different
from the rest makes this car worthy of consideration, and this one
is a custom example!
Exterior
Long before the custom touches hit your brain, the Plum Purple
paint does, a shade that Elvis and Prince would have likely
approved of. The headlight housing leans forward around the inset
lights, then sends the body line back where it is quickly
interrupted by an iconic body trim piece that starts on the fender
and sweeps down in dramatic motion to the door where in then
bounces like a ping pong ball straight back along the remaining and
sizable length of the car but not without feature faux vents in the
back. The elongated rear bumper holds a spare wheel in a chrome and
body colored case and the rockers are adorned with side pipes. Both
the front window and rear glass wrap around the car and as such,
shrink the pillars to create an open greenhouse under a sloping
roofline. A custom grille, color matched wheel coverings, wide
white walls, and white accent under the cabin present as show
worthy, but get close and note cracking paint throughout.
Interior
White pleated panels dress up the doors along with a die as the
window crank handle and both door panels are in nice condition,
setting the vibe which continues on the big, split bench up front
and wide, white bench in back. Purple carpet breaks the
monochromatic coverage of the cabin which continues up front where
a white steering wheel front a white dash replete with dice as
knobs and a giant version on the column shifter. Black faced gauges
look great and purple pinstriping along the white painted dash add
a bit of flair. There's an AM/FM/Cassette player under the dash
where the footwells are lined in more pleated white vinyl and
purple carpeted mats are there to protect the floor. The trunk is
similarly dressed and show worthy!
Drivetrain
A solid white panel lines the underside of the hood over a purple
highlighted 292ci V8 with an Edelbrock intake topped by three
2-barrel carburetors. A Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic backs the
engine up and routes power to the Ford 9" in back.
Undercarriage
Relatively clean and dry underneath with some typical surface rust
and just a drop or two of residual oil. Dual exhaust travels
through stock style mufflers on their way to chrome tips out back
and drum brakes are employed on all four wheels. Suspension is
simply coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
This purple cruiser has a bright interior, not just because of the
expanses of window acreage, but by the solid white coverage,
including the perforated headliner above. We grab the dice and roll
the car into drive, finding the 292 accommodating on the test loop
and six barrels on top providing enough gas to sustain decent
power. 75 series white walls on 15-inch wheels do well to smooth
road imperfections and the car tracks straight. We note the wipers
are weak and the clock is not working but all other functions
operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
This car puts the "custom" in Customline with a wild color inside
and out, clean lines, ornamental side pipes, and frenched tail
lights that set it apart from the thousands of other Customlines
out there. It's time to start a purple reign of your own with this
stunning 1956!
