Chrysler's beautiful, wood-bodied Town and Country models, produced
in limited numbers from 1941 through 1950 with a hiatus during
World War II, were instantly renowned for their exquisite
construction, which included a combination of structural white ash
and rich Honduran mahogany paneling, all skillfully finished with
the same attention to detail as fine furniture. Artisanal touches
such as exposed finger joinery and complex contours showcased a
level of craftsmanship that was becoming increasingly rare in
mass-produced automobiles.
The 1946 through 1948 Town and Country models are notable for being
among the few post-war vehicles to have earned the coveted Full
Classic title from the Classic Car Club of America, a vaunted
status largely reserved for models produced before World War II,
during a period in which flamboyant styling and exceptional
craftsmanship combined to create exquisite rolling sculptures. Rare
when new and rarer today, these artfully designed Chryslers with
genuine timber bodywork rightly stand among the pre-war greats.
Offered in a range of body styles under Chrysler's New Yorker,
Royal, and Windsor lines, the Town and Country shared those models'
respective wheelbases and engines. Though the convertible body
style on the New Yorker platform is popular among collectors, the
Windsor Town and Country Sedan is rarer. Our sedanis one of only
2,651 produced for the 1947 model year, according toChrysler's
Classic Woodieby Don Narus.
This example is finishedin correct Sea Mist Green over lovely green
leather with Highlander plaid inserts. Although it is an older
restoration, the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail
still shines more than 20 years later, thanks in no small part to
its careful upkeep. It is powered by a correct 251 CI L Head inline
six cylinder engine, mated to a 3 speed column shift automatic
transmission. This Town and Country also features an incredible
wooden roof rack as well as dual remote spotlights.
