"When the Ford Motor Company needed a new car aimed at the youth
market of the 1960s, it created the instantly popular Mustang. When
it decided to turn the Mustang into a true sports car it turned to
Carroll Shelby. And when Shelby needed an engineer to develop what
would become the classic Mustang GT350 he hired Chuck Cantwell. The
Shelby GT350 won the SCCA's B-Production National Championship
three years in a row, and Ford won two consecutive Trans Am
Manufacturers Championships in Mustangs prepared and campaigned by
Shelby American." Bull Publishing on their book 'Shelby Mustang
GT350'
For consignment, a 1965 Ford Mustang GT350 tribute showing 874
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Here's a streetable version
of an automotive icon and one that is clean inside and out, serving
as a show worthy representative.
Exterior
Already one of the most desired of the classic Mustang body
configurations there is, this one puts on a winning coat of
Wimbledon White with LeMans Blue Shelby stripes and as if putting
on an Elvis jumpsuit, it becomes instantly recognizable as a
legend. The race version is visually light with many of the pesky
pedestrian features like bumpers removed, but they're here on this
one in shiny chrome. This one also retains the showroom quarter
window louvers and epic exhaust tips that exit through the roll pan
beside the reverse lights, both of which the racecar did not need.
Tires closer to factory specs also adorn this car, 215/60R15's on
American Racing Torque Thrust wheels which offer a nice nod to the
racer's 5 spoke magnesium units. The paint, trim, and gaps are
fantastic on the car and the only imperfection we find is some
minor bumps on the blue stripe near the fuel cap.
Interior
We trade lightness and racing safety features for comfort and
drivability where things get quite commuter friendly beginning with
the clean and standard black vinyl door panels on the portals that
lead to the black split bench seat with horse scroll embossed on
the upper pads and an armrest between them. There is a fold down
rear 2+2 and both the seats and the Shelby branded cargo floor
cover are wonderfully clean. A wood rimmed steering wheel on tilt
column fronts a dash that combines original styling with the
horizontal speedometer and modern conveniences like the A-pillar
mounted gauges, an AM/FM radio with a digital readout, and a tri
pack of added gauges below the dash. Our automatic shifter is
Ford's standard T-handle unit and it rides the transmission tunnel
covered expertly with black loop carpet, accentuated with Shelby
branded mats. A black headliner is in very nice condition and the
trunk is lined with a plaid mat and houses a spare Torque Thrust
wheel.
Drivetrain
An aluminum radiator, electric fan, and transmission cooler augment
the rebuilt 289ci V8 under the hood, fueled by an Edelbrock
4-barrel carburetor. Lots of polished components, finned covers,
and red wiring dress this bay up, and matte black braces almost
disappear in the background amongst all the shine. An AOD 4-speed
automatic backs up the powerplant and routes power to the Ford 8"
in back with 2.80 gears. We're sure the race car did not have power
steering and air conditioning, but this car has both!
Undercarriage
Clean and dry underneath where surface rust is reserved for the
driveshaft and some bolts only. Tri-Y headers lead to a Magnaflow
stainless steel system which eventually finds the openings in the
valance to exit. A Wilwood master cylinder and booster power the
Rod and Custom Motorsports power disc brakes at all four wheels,
while suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs
in back.
Drive-Ability
Peering over the hood scoop and bright blue racing stripes is worth
the price of admission, and the fine running 289 is icing on the
cake. This well sorted 'Stang does everything well including
accelerating, handling, and stopping. It might get eaten by the
real deal in a race, but it will look good losing. We note the gas
gauge and radio are not working but all other functional items
operate as they should and we race this one back to the mall to
receive its audience on the showroom floor. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Even if we imagine there was no Shelby GT350 race legend, this car
would still present as a stunning version of the desirable 1965
fastback. It checks all the boxes for everything you'd want in a
classic Mustang and has the equivalent of a very good singer
wearing the cape and bedazzled jumpsuit of a king.
