"If you've ever hankered to own a sports car, but your needs call
for 6 passenger room, you'll know at first glance that this
dashing, all new Starliner was created for you! As our eyes drink
in the beauty of this jaunty 2 door hardtop, you'll realize, too,
that here is a beautifully proportioned motor car. Its flowing,
swept back lines give the Starliner a racy appearance that is
daringly different, unmatched by any other full sized car on the
American Road today." From the 1960 Galaxie brochure.
For consignment, a 1960 Ford Galaxie Starliner 2-door club Victoria
showing 88,327 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This one was
restored by our consignor after purchasing it in 2008 and although
about 65,000 were made in 1960, they remain incredibly uncommon,
especially in this condition, and this is the first Starliner we've
had the pleasure of representing at Classic Auto Mall.
Exterior
The '60 brochure so aptly describes the amazing proportions of the
car, but on our example, it's complemented by the two stage Monte
Carlo Red pain with a Corinthian White roof and amazing aluminum
insert on the rear fender under jet- like rear wings. Keep walking
to the back and the influence is obvious prompting one source to
call it a 'rare space aged bruiser'. If ever there was a car that
looked like it could fly and line the stars, the rear fascia of
this Starliner checks all the boxes. A continuous trim line runs
from the nose of the front fender all the way back to the tail, and
a shorter spear over the rear panel gives the car motion while
static, assisted by the sweeping dual antennae and teardrop fender
skirts. Paint and metalwork are in fantastic condition with limited
imperfections noted as some waviness on a panel and paint run on
the rocker.
Interior
A Thunderbird inspired interior begins with three levels of color
on the door panels with red, metal, and black. Up front, a split
bench seat combines smooth red vinyl with tweed-like plaid inserts
which is mirrored in the back and extend up onto the package shelf.
NOS fabric was used during the restoration. It's red on red up
front where the steering wheel fronts the dash and instrument
cluster in a horizontal configuration in a brushed metal frame.
Robust knobs take the center panel, in line with the AM/FM radio
within a concave curve that continues the width of the dash. Black
loop carpet covers the floor perfectly and an ivory headliner is
intact and in very good shape. Our massive trunk's floor is covered
by a period plaid vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
A clean presentation is found under the hood where a 352ci V8
resides, fueled by a 2-barrel carburetor and rated at 220
horsepower. A Cruise-O-Matic 3 speed automatic backs it up and
routes power to the Ford 9" in back with 3.56 gears. Per our
consignor, the engine has been retrofitted with a FlameThrower 2
ignition electronic system.
Undercarriage
No complaints here as it is clean and dry and rust free. Drum
brakes are all around and the dual exhaust flows through stock
style mufflers before exiting through chrome tips out back.
Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in
the back.
Drive-Ability
The bright greenhouse is helped by the enormous, curved rear window
and narrow C-pillars, while the bench seat and big steering wheel
provide a comfortable platform from which to pilot this lean
machine. The V8 comes to life without hesitation and we roll this
big car onto the test loop where it performs well, tracking
straight and stopping on demand, while providing plenty of power.
Maybe not enough to launch the car into space, but fine for
exploring planet earth! We note the clock is not working but all
other functions operate as they should and we return to our
aircraft carrier, the S.S. Morgantown at Classic Auto Mall. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
The color, relative uncommonness, and amazing body lines of this
1960 Starliner should instantly put it on your wishlist. Especially
if you're a fan of Galaxies, because this one is out of this world!
This may be our opinion but one that's hard to argue with, this
might be the most exciting car of the Fairlane and Galaxie line of
1960!
