The Fleetwood Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, was founded
by Harry Urich in the nineteenth century. It began as a small
community of craftsmen founded by Henry Fleetwood, Esq. of
Penwortham, near Lancaster, England, (the Fleetwood family
flourished in England in the 17th and 18th centuries). When the
Sixty Special Series was retired in 1977, the Fleetwood Brougham
took its place as Cadillac's largest owner driven sedan model
through 1986. From 1987, it was renamed to Cadillac Brougham and
the "d'Elegance" was an option package that designated the most
luxurious Brougham.
For consignment, a 1991 Cadillac Brougham d'Elegance with a title
verified 88,589 actual miles. Distinctly Cadillac and still rear
wheel drive, this stately automobile represented the pinnacle of
success and just 8,812 d'Elegance were produced in '91, about a
third of the total Brougham production.
Exterior
Long straight panels and large horizontal surfaces are colored with
two stage Light Sapphire Blue Metallic and present in very nice
condition. The blue vinyl top is also in nice shape, including the
Cadillac crest on the C-pillar while surrounding the fixed quarter
window on the door and for extra luxury, a coach lamp is embedded
in each B-pillar. Wire wheel covers adorn each of the 15-inch
wheels matching in brightness the trim piece that runs from the
hood and around the cabin, as well as another trim over the silver
painted rocker panel. Out back, robust chrome tail light nacelles
surround the vertical lenses with a frosted presentation and small
Cadillac coat of arms, bookending the razor straight chrome bumper.
Reverse lights are reserved for the space adjacent to the license
plate on the down side of a long, flat decklid. Composite
headlights looked very modern in 1991 and are topped by a classic
hood ornament. This car shows no glaring exterior
imperfections.
Interior
Blue leather floods the luxurious doors and d'Elegance is
embroidered into each, indicating the upgraded design option.
Simulated wood trim is everywhere, including around each element of
the doors where chrome and brushed nickel metal sets a classy
contrast. Seatbelts are anchored to the front doors in an
interesting configuration. Once inside, the buckets seats of blue
leather are biscuit tufted and the uppers are pillow topped and in
very good condition while the rear seats share the material and
color and barely look used. Rear passengers are afforded handles on
the back of the front seats along with deep magazine pockets, and a
lighter and ashtray for each side. The steering wheel and dash
dominated by the woodgrain is in excellent condition with a digital
read out instead of analog needles, and the center stack contains
an integrated AM/FM/Cassette radio and an electronic climate
control panel. The plush blue carpet below is toes deep and in
overall nice condition, topped by thick carpeted mats and the foam
backed headliner is near flawless. An enormous trunk is finished
with gray cloth panels and a Cadillac branded mat, housing a
covered spare and plenty of room for other things.
Drivetrain
Under the big hood is a clean and stock looking 5.0 liter V8 with
electronic fuel injection and a horsepower rating of 170. It is
backed by GM's trustworthy 700R4 4-speed transmission that routes
power all the way back to the 10 bolt axle with 3.08 gears.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with surface rust
throughout, some oil on the rear differential and on the oil pan
and flywheel cover, along with a few small holes on the exhaust
pipe beyond the stock style muffler of the single pipe system.
Power brakes are onboard to slow this land yacht, disc up front and
drums in back. Coil springs are front and rear with a 4 link in
back.
Drive-Ability
Floaty, soft, smooth. That's what Caddy's are known for and this
one doesn't disappoint. The five liter puts out adequate power and
our 70 series tires with a mid 2019 date code, help soften road
imperfections on our test loop. It's beyond comfortable in the
cabin and you will arrive at your destination well rested but try
not to fall asleep on the pillow tops. We note the A/C and front
power reclining seat option is not working, but all other functions
operate as they should and we float this blue cruiser back to the
mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's one from a bygone era when Cadillacs were still regarded as
the best of the best. If you had a Brougham, you've arrived and
likely became a Cadillac devotee if you weren't already one. After
a long career in the wholesale food business, Uncle Harry drove
one, and we never saw him without a smile behind the wheel. This
one will light you up too!
