For Sale: 1947 Lincoln Continental Convertible in Newberg, Oregon

Vehicle Description

1947 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet.

Located near Portland, Oregon.

The Lincoln Continental was a collaboration between Edsel Ford and Robert Gregorie, who produced the original concept based on Edsel's request for a personal luxury car with a "Continental flair." Produced beginning in 1940, the first-generation Continentals were instantly popular with Hollywood celebrities and others looking for a stylish car that broke the mold of conventional designs at the time. The rear-mounted spare tire became known as a "Continental kit" and the term was later adopted by other manufacturers. The stylish body on a compact 125 inch wheelbase was wrapped around the Lincoln V-12 engine, which was the last production V-12 offered by an American marque. Following World War II, a redesigned Continental was offered with a wider stance and grille, the last ones being produced in 1948. It was the end of an era.

This particular Continental lived much of its life in Southern California. The previous owner found it in a classified advertisement in the Los Angeles Times in 1982. He purchased it in original condition and set out on a multi-year restoration. The body was repainted in Lincoln "Skyline Blue," a lovely, subtle color with a deep shine. Overall condition is excellent with only a few small blemishes noted. All of the chrome was re-plated and continues to show brightly today. The excellent blue leather upholstery compliments the interior, which is accented with factory gold plated trim on the dashboard, door handles and trunk hardware. The hydraulic power windows and electric power top work well. Tan Haartz cloth canvas top is in excellent condition with glass rear window and matching top boot.

The 292 cubic inch V-12 engine produces 125 horsepower and was fully rebuilt. It starts easily, runs smoothly with good power. 3-speed manual transmission shifts crisply. Overdrive is untested. Brakes stop well. Easily keeps up with modern freeway traffic. Recent service performed includes tune-up with new spark plugs and complete carburetor rebuild. Undercarriage is clean and nicely detailed.

During restoration, the owner died and the car passed to his son, where it remained for a decade. It was sold to the current owner in 2022 who worked on finishing some of the small details that had been left undone. Recently the electrical system was assessed by a professional automotive electrician who hooked up many of the items on the new wiring harness. Headlights, tail lights, fog lights and turn signals work. A few items we have noted as not functioning at present: Radio, clock, wipers, spotlight, oil pressure and gas gauges. New Firestone wide whitewall tires were also recently fitted.

A Classic Car Club of America "Full Classic"™, this Lincoln is eligible to participate in all CCCA events, shows and tours, as well as those of the Lincoln and Continental Owner's Club. Overall, this is a nicely restored Continental that can be enjoyed now for pleasurable driving or local showing and upgraded as desired. It will turn heads wherever it goes.

It could not be restored to this level today for the asking price.
