While it may be gone from production, the legend of the Chevelle is
far from forgotten. One look at this 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396
Tribute, and it's easy to see why this car has amassed a massive
following over the last half-century. Fully repainted in this
eye-catching aqua blue, along with its complementary black hood and
beltline stripes to go along with its correctly placed SS badging,
this car makes an entrance anywhere it goes.
Inside, we find a clean, stock-style black vinyl interior. A center
console separates a pair of bucket seats. A power-assisted
three-spoke steering wheel sits in front of a three-pod gauge
cluster that includes a large 120 mph speedometer and a big analog
clock, surrounded by four auxiliary meters that display gas, oil
pressure, engine temperature, and battery health. Sliding HVAC
controls and an AM radio bring you back to a simpler time, while an
additional set of Stewart Warner gauges has been neatly mounted at
the base of the center stack, offering more accurate readings than
the dummy dashboard lights. Finally, a staple-style shifter is
perfectly placed as either an action level or handrest.
Under the hood, we find a period-correct 396 cubic-inch V-8 engine.
A single four-barrel Holley carburetor feeds an Edelbrock aluminum
intake manifold, while spent gases are routed through a FlowMaster
dual exhaust, capped with a set of chrome tips to complete this
powertrain. That power is funneled through TH400 three-speed
automatic transmission before being sent out to the twelve-bolt
rear end.
