1937 Hudson Custom 8 Series 77 Country Club Touring Sedan
"There's no stopping today's trend to longer, lower, wider cars
with easier control and more power. And again in 1937, Hudson has
chosen to lead this trend. This has meant the complete redesigning
of cars that were completely new for 1936. Hudson has pioneered
eighty or more 'firsts' in automobile progress, many of which have
become standard in the industry". From the 1937 Hudson salesman
booklet, a 200 page tome dedicated to every aspect of the '37
line.
For consignment, a 1937 Hudson Custom 8 Series 77 Country Club
Touring Sedan showing 14,254 miles, but the true miles are unknown.
Owned by our consignor for more than 30 years, but enjoyed by the
original owner in recent years as it was used to take him to dinner
on his 85thbirthday!
Exterior
The Custom Eight Series 77 was the most luxurious offering from
Hudson at the time, and one look at this incredible car and its
129" wheelbase makes that evident. Stately, handsome, and elegant,
its color is aptly named, Royal Maroon. The fully expressed arching
fenders flow back to give this upright car some movement, connected
by a substantial running board and fender skirts on the rear are
adorned with an ornamental crest. Entering the car entails opening
the barn door like configuration with wide portals and a high roof
while a long nose is led by a translucent ornament and amber fog
lights. In the rear, a humpback luggage compartment fulfills the
need for extra space, reserving the cabin for human comfort alone.
This stunner passes the white glove test with flying colors and we
could find no glaring exterior imperfections.
Interior
The attractiveness does not end on the outside as a light brown
tweed like cloth covers the door panels, adorned with beautiful
stitching and trim, hand pulls, and hardware. The bench is matching
and clean with thick piping on the shell that matches the windlace
around the door. A foot rest, robe loop, and handle are provided to
rear passengers who have ample space and upright, cloth seating. An
ivory steering wheel with finger grooves fronts a woodgrain dash
that houses instruments in the center in a clean arrangement and
art deco inspired design, adopted by the clock on the glove box as
well. On the floor we find a black rubber mat and rising shifter,
along with a heater while the headliner in matching brown is
congruent with the car's condition. The trunk is large but not
dressy and has a shelf over the spare tire.
Drivetrain
Behind the engine cover, we find a clean 254.5 inline eight
cylinder engine rated at 122 horsepower and fueled by dual 1-barrel
carburetors. It is mated to a 3-speed manual transmission that
routes power to the rear axle and 4.11 gears.
Undercarriage
Show quality underneath with a few drips here and there and minimal
surface rust. Suspension consists of leaf springs front and rear
and drum brakes are also distributed to both ends. A single exhaust
runs through a stock style muffler, snaking through the X-frame,
then finds its way to the outside via a clean, steel pipe.
Drive-Ability
This enormous car floats across our test loop providing an absolute
lap of luxury with soft, warm surroundings in the cabin. It's a
nice place to be and we can only imagine jaunts to the country in
this high end car. It runs smoothly and tracks straight with only
the heater blower and fog light not working, leaving all other
functions operational and getting checkmarks on our list! While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is a fantastic collector grade Hudson that deserves a warm,
waterproof garage and frequent drives. Metrommp writes, "The Hudson
Custom Eight was not just a car; it was a statement of
sophistication and technological prowess. Among its many accolades,
the Series 77 was known for being one of the first cars to offer a
balanced combination of power, comfort, and design".
