"You see them everywhere. Hauling seed and fertilizer on farms and
ranches Doing yeoman's duty on big city construction sites. Towing
trailers, snowmobiles, boats and campers for vacationers coast to
coast. All over America, full size Chevy pickups are working
wherever tough jobs are being done." From the 1985 sales
brochure
For consignment, a 1985 Silverado 10 short bed pickup with a title
verified 44,612 actual miles. Newer tires, a newer transmission,
and a hard tonneau with side rails make this a worthy candidate if
you're looking for a vintage short bed that's been well
maintained.
Exterior
Midnight Black in single stage covers the truck but it's the
personal touches that result in a standout appearance. A set of
yellow fog lights are perched on the chrome bumper between the
bumper guards adding the array of front lights that include the
stacked headlights and markers embedded in the eggcrate grille. On
the side, wide aluminum running boards connect at the wheel opening
to double as a rock guard while providing easy access to the cab.
On the bed, a robust, locking tonneau with side rails in case extra
tie down storage is needed. Out back, a diamond steel plated bumper
also provides a place to step when you need to into the bed or to
the top of the tonneau. The 15-inch Rally wheels are wrapped in
235/75R15's with an early 2025 date code. Imperfections include a
dry and cracked gravel guard overlay on the rear quarters, an area
of peeling paint on a horizontal surface, some patina on the window
trim, and bubbles on the paint of the tonneau.
Interior
The blue door panels show some patina with some fading and
discoloration but are intact with a pleated cloth insert, carpeted
lower, and map pocket below each window crank. The charcoal cloth
bench seat shows a touch of age but is fully intact and maintaining
its ultra 80's original motif which is also relayed by the simple
steering wheel and uncomplicated instrument cluster and its brushed
aluminum faceplate, all in decent shape with a crack in the dash
pad just above. The rest has a custom fit cover that was very
popular in the 80's. The original AM/FM/Cassette is accompanied by
a Kenwood CD player embedded in a custom box on top of the
transmission hump. Nice gray carpet below, a reinforced headliner
above, and robust top grab handles complete the interior. The bed
shows use but is otherwise clean.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a driver quality 5.0 liter V8 with a 4-barrel
carburetor and mated to a newer 700R4 4-speed automatic
transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear with 2.73 gears.
The bay presents in stock configuration, a virtual time capsule of
1985!
Undercarriage
Clean and dry underneath with just your typical surface rust and
patina. Power brakes are onboard as front discs and rear drums, and
the single exhaust system splits at the end to create two exhaust
tips. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs
in the back.
Drive-Ability
Into the cabin we go and with a prime of the carburetor and a turn
of the key, the five liter comes to life prompting us to move the
column shifter to drive. Plenty of power on tap and the truck
tracks straight and provides ample visibility with a sliding window
in back. This well maintained, low mileage truck checks all the
boxes and all functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
The unique tonneau on this truck really got our attention and it
adds just the right touch of 80's utility to a vehicle that has
plenty of working days ahead of it if that's the direction you go
with it. The further we get from 1985, the fewer of these trucks
you see on the road, and as they begin to show up at car shows as a
vintage vehicle, it's a sudden surprise for some of us 80's kids,
but we're happy to support the collectability of survivors like
this one.
