This 1966 BMW R50/2 has remained with its original owner and his family following his passing, until it was acquired by me in 2002. It is finished in Avus Black and is powered by a 494cc opposed-twin paired with a four-speed transmission. Features include 18″ chrome rims, a driveshaft, a Schorsch Meier two-up seat, a chrome cross-braced handlebar, bar-end turn signals, a side stand, and dual Bing carburetors. This R50/2 is offered with New Hampshire registration. It also comes with extensive memorabilia connected to the bike since it was purchased new in 1966.
The bike is finished in Avus Black and features a Schorsch Meier two-up seat, bar-end turn signals, a handlebar-mounted mirror, a locking storage compartment, black rubber knee grips, and center and side stands. There is a dent in the front fender.
Wire-spoke wheels with 18″ chrome-steel rims wear Metzler Perfect tires. Suspension is provided by an Earles fork as well as preload-adjustable shocks mounted to the swingarm on the left and the final-drive housing on the right. Braking is handled by front and rear drums.
The chrome cross-braced handlebar fronts a 120-mph speedometer and a pair of indicator lights. The five-digit odometer shows 9k miles, 30 of which were ridden under current ownership.
The 494cc opposed-twin features dual Bing carburetors and was factory rated at 25 horsepower. Recommissioning work carried out in 2010 consisted of changing the engine, transmission, and driveshaft oils, and replacing the filters, oil pan gasket, and engine, transmission, input shaft seals. Regular maintenance has been performed since.
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a four-speed transmission as well as a driveshaft enclosed within the right leg of the swingarm.
The headstock plate indicates that this bike is a R50/2 with serial number 641248, and photos showing the numbers stamped on the frame and engine case can be viewed in the gallery.
