In terms of pure visual recognition, nothing comes close to the
iconic Jeep brand. Before the Wrangler came along, the Jeep CJ
series was literally a civilian version (CJ stood for Civilian
Jeep) of the military variants, making it more driver- and
passenger-friendly. First introduced in 1945 with the Willys CJ-2A,
this 1984 Jeep CJ represents the final iteration of the hardcore CJ
lineup. Decked out in its captivating Dark Green Metallic repaint,
this CJ7 is equipped with an easy-to-remove bikini top, a stout
tubular front bumper, and hard half-doors adapted from a YJ
Wrangler.
Inside, we find a surprisingly comfortable Saddle Tan-colored vinyl
interior. A pair of high-back bucket seats provides an expansive
view of the stainless-steel dashboard, where an upgraded gauge
cluster offers a far more engaging presentation of vehicle info
than the unit it replaces. An "Out of Sight" AM/FM/AUX Bluetooth
head unit is hidden away under the dashboard. A three-spoke
power-assisted steering wheel sits ahead of a myriad of push/pull
and twist knobs for HVAC controls. Two twist knobs at the top
corner of each side of the dashboard are ready to let you fold down
the front windshield if the desire hits you.
Under the hood, we find a unique 4.6-liter inline-six-cylinder
Golen Engine. Fed using a single two-barrel carburetor mounted to a
Clifford intake manifold, this stout six dispenses with spent gases
through a shorty header that feeds into a single exhaust capped off
with a Turbo muffler. Pumping out a dyno-proven 271 horsepower and
315 pound-feet of torque, those ponies are routed through a
tried-and-true five-speed Borg Warner T5 manual transmission before
heading out to either the rear wheel or all four corners if
four-wheel drive is engaged.
