The shape and allure of a classic C3 Corvette are impossible for
almost anyone to deny. With its nearly two-decade model run from
1968 to 1982, the third generation of the Corvette has inspired
millions of dreams, fantasies, and appeared on more than a few
bucket lists. If you are one of those who missed out on owning one
of these beauties the first time around, one look at this
numbers-matching 1980 Chevrolet Corvette L82, with an incredible
22,827 believed actual miles, and repainted in its original Silver
exterior, could be your second chance. The sinewy Coke bottle
shape, wonderfully practical T-top roof, and overall factory
appearance of this 'Vette let you travel back in time to the back
end of the third generation of Chevy's halo car.
Inside, we find a barely broken-in Oyster leather-and-cloth
interior that appears to be original and unrestored. A tilt and
telescoping steering power-assisted steering wheel sits just ahead
of a new-looking 85 mph speedometer and 7,000 rpm tachometer. A
five-pod auxiliary gauge cluster sits in easy view on the center
stack. The only obvious upgrade this interior has gotten is a
modern JVC AM/FM/CD head unit. Power windows and locks, cruise
control, and a roomy carpeted rear cargo area make this 'Vette as
much fun on the inside as it is on the outside.
Under the hood, we find a numbers-matching L82 350 cubic-inch V-8
topped by a single four-barrel carburetor and aluminum intake
manifold. Stock-style exhaust manifolds flow into a
dual-to-single-to-dual exhaust, giving this small block its
authentic from-the-factory sound. When new, the L82 produced 230
horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Those ponies are funneled
through a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission before being
sent out to the Corvette rear.
