"The 911 is still an impressively flexible car with useful cargo
room and legs long enough to turn any mundane trip into an F1
qualifying run. The updated engine nearly matches the charismatic
burble of the old air cooled motors but has gobs more low end grunt
and stronger high rpm power." Car and Driver, Oct. 2001
For consignment, a 2001 Porsche Carrera coupe showing 54,677 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. The prancing horse on the Porsche
badge is very similar to the Ferrari horse, as you may have
noticed. For Porsche, it makes sense: it's actually integral to the
coat of arms for the city of Stuttgart, Porsche's home.
Exterior
Arctic Silver Metallic covers this streamlined beauty that likely
scored high in the wind tunnel. A smooth nose, flush headlights,
and steeply sloped windshield sends air over the top and along the
declining rear quarter, off to its atmospheric destiny! In profile,
contoured rocker panels deal with any turbulence that finds its way
to the flanks and smooth side panels and the gently curved shoulder
line give the car width and character. The tail is unmistakably 911
with flush tail lights on the corners, an epic tucked wing, and
dual tips below the symmetrical bumperettes. OEM wheels in a
turbine design carry low profile ZR rated tires and you can check
this one off your shopping list because they are fresh, with a date
code of mid 2024. A spot of curb rash on one wheel is the only
imperfection we perceive on the car.
Interior
There are sleek stylish door panels and there are handsome door
panels, and we would categorize this car's panels as both. Solid
black with silver accents, swooping components, and a small
integrated storage bin. Tall backed, black leather bucket seats are
in great condition and the rear 2+2 are tight but nicely padded,
with the ability to fold down to provide more cargo room. It's
Porsche ergonomics up front with a comfortable steering wheel
that's just the right size, and it frames a contoured instrument
cluster with overlapping dials with sharp, red needles. Hidden
cupholders are in the center stack along with an AM/FM/CD unit, CD
drawers, and a twin screen A/C panel. This leads to the
artistically formed shifter in the center console in a flowing
plastic base where the storage bin and switchgear area shows some
patina and scratches. Black carpet lines the footwells and cargo
area and is in nice shape as is the headliner that surrounds the
sunroof.
Drivetrain
Now water cooled, the engine presents in nice, driver condition and
it's a 3.4 liter DOHC flat six cylinder, fuel injected, and rated
at a stout 296 horsepower. It's set into motion via a ZF 5-speed
automatic transmission that has Tiptronic capability and keeps
power in back with 3.44 gearing.
Undercarriage
Most of the action is out back as much of the bottom is covered
with aerodynamic belly pans. The underside is also of driver
quality with indications this car has been driven and loved! The
dual exhaust flows with header-like ease from the block, into the
original mufflers, and out back via chrome tips. Power disc brakes
are onboard all four wheels and suspension consists of independent
coil spring front and back.
Drive-Ability
Balanced, fast, comfortable, and the sound of the engine behind you
is an intoxicating one. The car has good power, handles
fantastically, and stops on a dime. This is a Porsche, after all.
The radio is inoperable so the only music you'll hear is the
pleasing exhaust note for now. Meanwhile, all other functions on
the car operate as they should and this star of Stuttgart is ready
to take its place under the lights! While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
There is no substitute, of course, and 996 models still rate as a
performance bargain. But that won't last long as experts predict
values will go up. This is a sleek, silver example with the option
of shift free driving or thumb controlled Tiptronic, a clean
interior, and brand new tires! If you're ready to obtain that
coveted VIN to join the Porsche Club of America, this might be your
E-ticket ride!
