For Sale: 1965 Ford Mustang in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

Having only recently been introduced to the public, the first generation Mustangs seem to have changes made to design aspects nearly every year, some drastic, others subtle. From 1965 to 1966, a few subtle exterior items changed included the door scoops which were done with a 3 bar, black and chrome variant in 1966, the vertical bar through the running horse on the grille was gone in 1966 and the grille itself went from honeycomb design to vertical and horizontal bars, and back up lights were standard for 1966 and optional for 1965, so if you don't see them chances are it's a 1965.

For consignment, a 1965 Ford Mustang convertible showing 65,089 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Lambasted by Road & Track on their initial review, their critical eye and opinion would have never pegged this car to be an American favorite. Yet here we are, 60 years later, with an iconic piece of American automotive history, here with a lot of originality and some room for a little TLC.

Exterior
Rangoon Red paint drapes the straight steel panels of this car with plenty of polished single stage shine still reflecting our indoor lights. A black pinstripe accents the side panels, bordering the infamous Mustang body line, here with no ornamental duct at the rear. Up front, flanking the galloping Mustang badge are the single headlights in the faux vented inserts. Decklid gaps are well minded and the rear fascia with its distinctive tail lights lacks reverse lights in the smooth roll pan under the chrome bumper. With shiny standard issues 14-inch wheel covers, this first year Mustang has you arriving in style and class and the black canvas top houses a clear plastic rear window. Imperfections include scratches, chips, bubbling, and some touched up scrapes.

Interior
Black ribbed vinyl door cards grace the textured steel door shells and are dressed with polished metal cranks, both in good condition. Slipping inside leads our posteriors to a pair of black vinyl low back bomber style buckets with both sides showing some rips in the cushion seam. A matching bench is in the rear and is in good condition and the carpet below all of it would benefit from replacement. Ford's T-handle shifter on the transmission tunnel and standard steering wheel fronts the drive. An original dash with the central horizontal speedometer, and single flanking circular gauges on either side shows some age but is fully intact. A simple AM radio is front and center and the trunk wears a weathered plaid vinyl mat and a full sized spare.

Drivetrain
Under the hood we see an original looking, driver quality 200ci inline 6 cylinder topped by a 1-barrel carburetor and rated at 120 horsepower. On back is a C4 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power to a 7.25" rear axle wrapping 3.20 gears.

Undercarriage
Driver quality here with the typical surface rust and a film of oil on the pans and surrounding area along with some grime on the knuckles. There are patch repairs along the front unibody rails, belly pan and rust along the inner rockers. For componentry, we have some recently repaired drum brakes on all four corners, a single exhaust that travels through a stock style muffler, all intact, and suspension that consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in the back.

Drive-Ability
Mechanically, the 200ci does not fail and the little one barrel delivers fuel and the car sparks to life without issue. We circle the test loop to find a good running engine, straight tracking, and typical standard handling. The transmission shifts just fine and most working items in the car operate as expected. What doesn't includes the dash lights, the heater blower, horn, and right turn signal. All else checks out! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This car was delivered to the Philadelphia District Sales Office wearing Rangoon Red and a convertible top and all these years later, not much has changed. Sixty year olds show their age but can still get around, and that's what we have here! A good driver with decent bones and plenty of life left to create new memories. Whether it's your new project or weekend joy ride, this red pony car is ready for someone to take the reins!
