The C5 Corvette was a game changer because it improved on the
progressively rounder C4 and created a sleeker car with more power,
better fuel economy, and more driver focused ergonomics. Magnetic
Selective Ride Control was standard on 1SC equipped anniversary
editions and most other 2003 models. The successful run of the C5
went from 1997 through the 2004 model year with more than 30,000
units produced each year.
For consignment, a 2003 Corvette Coupe with a title verified 80,944
actual miles. This one received the 50thanniversary designation and
is a well maintained car that wears a relatively rare color for the
year.
Exterior
Only 967 coupes, (8% of coupe production), were painted Electron
Blue Metallic in 2003 and this is one of them. The wide and low
front end with its hidden headlights and narrow horizontal grille
is sporty and aggressive. There is no mistaking this look when one
is coming up behind you on the highway. The side gills set the
stage for body contours that extend past the door, and the chrome 5
spoke wheels are in excellent condition with 17-inchers up front
and 18-inchers in back. Side mirrors and the flush door handles are
body colored and the rear valance, topped by those epic four tail
lights, is wide and aggressive and the Corvette stamping is
highlighted in silver. The air foils and quad tailpipes at the
bottom create a stunning visual and auditory delight, with some
dress up chrome in between. The targa top blends in almost
seamlessly and color matched to the car. Imperfections are limited
to some chin scrapes and some flex cracks on the rear cover.
Interior
Since not all 967 blue Corvettes had Light Gray interiors in 2003,
and only 1,511 total coupes did, the combination of Electron Blue
and Light Gray is likely well below the 967. And may we say, a
fantastic spec. The molded plastic doors are black on top and gray
on the bottom and controls are canted to fit the wrist. Gray
leather sport bucket seats are in super shape with straight
stitched inserts and firm side bolstering and noted is some slight
compression to the driver's bottom. Our black steering wheel is in
very nice condition while the standard gauge package is clear and
easy to read with no unnecessary extras. The standard AM/FM/CD
radio is in the center stack along with the heat and AC controls,
all housed in molded black plastic. A billet knob tops the shifter
which is situated in a boot of black leather next to an active
handling button and 50thanniversary crest on the center console.
The gray low pile carpet is protected by black Corvette carpeted
mats and continues to the rear cargo area. We note some slight
sagging in the headliner of the targa top, but overall the interior
is clean.
Drivetrain
Power comes from a 5.7 liter LS1 V8 rated at 345 horsepower
presenting cleanly under the hood and augmented by a Vortex Ram Air
induction unit which sends air to mix with fuel injection to spark
combustion. This potent mill is tied to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic
transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 3.15 gears and
Positraction.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions prevail underneath with some typical surface rust,
minor at best. Our car has a Corsa Cat Back exhaust system and of
course, it is in dual configuration. The suspension consists of
independent unequal lengthdouble wishboneswithtransverse fiberglass
monoleaf springsand optionalmagnetorheological dampers. To improve
handling and weight distribution, Chevy put an integrated transaxle
in the back, and this can be seen from under the car. Naturally,
power disc brakes are front and rear with the slotted and drilled
units visible through the wide spoked wheels.
Drive-Ability
No surprises on our short jaunt around the test loop. The car has
amazing acceleration, incredible handling, and the cabin is a very
nice place to be. Some people prefer the heart pounding impact of
red interiors, but some of us prefer the calm, cool surroundings of
gray tones. This '03 sounds great and tracks well and this is one
we could definitely live with. All functions operate as intended
and it's under the indoor lights for this blue beauty! While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Not to be forward, but may we suggest some vanity plates? BLUBYU,
BLUVETT, 1OF967, MYBLUC5, BLUGRAY. Of course, you can toss these
ideas in the trash, but do not throw away the idea of purchasing
this pampered 2003 C5 Corvette. It's a stunner.
