"Here is the classic Cadillac with front wheel drive and a flair
all its own. And what a superb automobile it is. A car of
unmistakable luxury and impressive roadability. A magnificent
interior. Here the excitement of Eldorado takes on a special
appeal. Biarritz features interiors of soft, supple Sierra Grain
leather for the seating areas. The Cabriolet roof treatment, the
style and size of Biarritz back and rear quarter windows are
unmistakable. Special stripes accent the front fenders, doors and
rear quarter panels." From the 1978 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1978 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz showing 3,001
miles, but the true miles could not be title verified. Our
consignor says it's true mileage and the car certainly shows well,
inside, outside, topside, and underneath!
Exterior
Leading the way forward on this Cotillion White car is the massive
V-shaped grille with flanking rectangular headlights on the side
and a bumper below featuring some vertical all chrome guards. Even
the sides of the front of the car are adorned with vertical chrome
with winged badges in black. The long, long hood has stainless trim
that continues along the shoulder line and widens along the door
and rear quarter. Red pinstriping runs just below this trimming
running end to end with a break just before the white landau vinyl
top begins. Out back, the enormous deck lid is flanked by a
Cadillac classic, vertical tail lights. 15-inch wheels carry wide
white wall 205/75ZR15 tires with a mid 2024 date code. The vinyl
top, trim, chrome, and paint are in excellent condition, and we
could find no exterior imperfections.
Interior
The long doors are handsomely appointed with white leather,
plastic, red carpet, and simulated woodgrain trim and both are in
great shape with brushed aluminum faceplates and ashtray cover.
Turning to the seats, puffy and pillow topped, the split bench is
covered in white leather with button tufting, fit for a king, and
mirrored in the rear, like a pleated cloud of comfort. Red and
woodgrain adorn the steering wheel and dashboard and an AM/FM radio
is in the center along with a mounted CB microphone, a sign of the
times! Plush red carpet below is in nice shape and protected with
red mats while the expanse of the ceiling is covered with a white,
perforated headliner also in good condition. The clean trunk is
lined with gray cloth panels and a fitted rubber mat, presenting
cleanly like the entirety of the interior.
Drivetrain
Lift that massive hood and find a 425ci V8 with a 4-barrel
carburetor and a rating of 180 horsepower. Behind it, a TH425
3-speed automatic transaxle that keeps power up front with 2.73
gearing. The bay is clean with some chipping paint from a valve
cover as the only detraction from near flawless.
Undercarriage
Remarkably clean underneath, uniformly black, and only whispers of
surface rust are noted, mostly reserved for the single exhaust that
travels down the middle, through an original equipment muffler,
exiting behind the rear bumper. Power disc brakes are supplied to
all four wheels and suspension includes a level ride control
system, torsion bars up front and a 4 link with coil springs in the
back.
Drive-Ability
The term land yacht was reserved for cars like this, and its
massive proportions and pillow seats make for smooth sailing. The
425 pulls this car through the test loop with relative ease and
imperfections in the road are no match for this Caddy, which
smooths them out like a Zamboni machine on ice. It's quiet and
comfortable inside. We note the reverse lights and wipers are not
working but all other functions operate as they should on this well
preserved example. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
If this isn't the nicest '78 Biarritz in the country, we'd be
surprised. It is a virtual time capsule and a remnant of those days
when big cars and Detroit iron really meant something. Cadillac was
still the pinnacle of luxury and denotation of wealth and this car
just drips with it! We suspect this one will do very well and
receive lots of attention at Cadillac shows, or any other shows
where it docks.
