Here is a 1957 Chevrolet that is hard to miss.  This 150 has the look of a race car with its Black Widow design elements and fenderwell headers, but it’s really a street car with a 350ci engine, 700R4 overdrive transmission, and air conditioning.  It’s the best of both worlds for anyone wanting to have fun in a tri-five Chevy.

The car was repainted as a tribute to SEDCO’s famous Black Widow including the fuel injection emblems (though it is carbureted) and a 4-point roll bar.  It also received fenderwell headers with cutout plates up front and traction bars in back, all of which adds to the look.  The underside shows a solid frame and original floors without any rust holes.  All glass, seals, and window sweeps were replaced too.  It rides on 15” Torq Thrust wheels with Cooper tires all around (186/60 front, 245/60 rear).

The original straight-6 engine was replaced with a rebuilt 350 ci V8.  It also has a racing look with dual air ducts and Mickey Thompson valve covers, but this is actually a nice street build with proven performance parts including an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, 4-barrel carburetor, and Mallory ignition.  The transmission is a 700R4 4-speed automatic with external cooler followed by original style Hotchkiss rear end.  This ’57 has manual steering and manual brakes which use a dual master cylinder and front discs.  It also has air shocks in back so you can easily adjust the stance.  Finally, the battery has been relocated to the trunk and includes a cutoff switch.

The interior continues the color scheme with white bucket seats and door panels along with a black headliner, padded roll bar, and carpet.   There is also a black widow airbrushed on the dashboard.  The instrument cluster has a stock appearance along with a few auxiliary controls.  There is also a set of three underdash gauges and a top mounted tachometer that looks right at home.  Additional aftermarket equipment includes New Port Engineering electric wipers, a B&M floor shifter, and an HVAC panel with cold air conditioning.

This Chevrolet will draw a crowd wherever it goes with its classic design and race car looks.  But it is indeed a street car that runs well, has an overdrive transmission, and offers air conditioning.  It’s a great way to look the part without all the headaches.
