For the iconic Beach Boys to write a hit song about an engine, it
had to be a special motor attached to a special kind of car. One
look at this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS 409, decked out in a
beautiful Bright Red repaint and stretched over its two-door coupe
configuration, showcasing its straight lines, shimmering chrome
trim, and trick dual-triplet taillight arrangement, and it's easy
to see why this car was so inspiring.
Inside, we find a mostly stock restored black vinyl interior. A
split-bench front seat leaves plenty of room up front. At the same
time, the old-school two-spoke, power-assisted steering wheel adds
a splash of body-color red, sitting just ahead of a column-mounted
6,000 rpm tachometer and a horizontal 120 mph speedometer. A trio
of auxiliary gauges sits under the dashboard, while the sliding
HVAC controls and an AM/FM/Cassette radio sit against an SS-style
machine-turned dashboard insert.
Under that expansive hood, we find out what all the fuss is about.
Centered in a clean engine bay sits a 409 cubic-inch V-8. Part of
Chevy's famous W-series big-block motor family, this 409 sports a
set of chrome valve covers and an aluminum radiator. Topped with a
four-barrel Holley Performance carburetor, Edelbrock intake
manifold, and lightweight Edelbrock aluminum heads, spent gases are
expelled via FlowMaster dual exhaust. That power is routed through
a tried-and-true Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission before
heading out to the stock-style rear end, which transfers those
ponies to the pavement through a set of beautiful, 15-inch Rallye
wheels sporting knock-off-style center caps, shod in BFGoodrich
tires.
