When the sleek and sporty Boxster debuted in 1997, it
revolutionized the Porsche experience for enthusiasts worldwide.
One look at this particular 2004 Porsche Boxster S, and it's easy
to see why this car has become a favorite not only among Porsche
enthusiasts but also among driving purists everywhere. With its
believed original Seal Grey Metallic, this convertible looks great
from any angle, whether the power black top is up or down.
Inside, we find a Graphite Grey leather interior. A center console
separates a pair of bucket seats, which, although they need a
little TLC, offer two-way power adjustment and heat, and are
designed to be both supportive during twists and turns and plush
enough for long road trips. A compact and padded power-assisted
steering wheel features the company's crest, while just ahead, a
three-pod gauge cluster showcases Porsche's large center-mounted
7,000 rpm tachometer, accompanied by a speedometer and a
combination fuel and engine temperature gauge on either side. An
AM/FM/CD changer head unit handles soundtrack duties, while power
windows, mirrors, and locks, along with cruise control and air
conditioning, provide a range of modern amenities.
Pop the hood and you'll find this car's spare tire, because the
Boxster offers up a traditional rear trunk, a novel front trunk, or
frunk, thanks to its mid-mounted engine placement. Power comes from
a 3.2-liter water-cooled DOHC flat-six-cylinder engine. Thanks to
its aluminum construction, sequential fuel injection, and Porsche's
VarioCam variable cam timing system, this potent
naturally-aspirated motor produced 258 horsepower and 229
pound-feet of torque when it rolled off the assembly line in the
more powerful S trim. That power is funneled through a fun
five-speed Tiptronic DSP transmission before the transaxle sends
those ponies to the pavement via a set of ten-spoke wheels shod in
255/40ZR-17 Michelin rubber. At the same time, a narrower set of
205/50ZR-17 Pilot Sport tires handles steering duties up front.
