"An all new aero package is the primary change on the Trans Am and
the GTA. It consists of a lower, sleeker looking nose that takes
some getting used to but is quite attractive nonetheless. New lower
rocker panels and side fascias with a novel winged aero look
communicate a distinctive impression of speed that seems equally at
home with the new GTA rear wing or the carry over spoiler on the
Formula Firebird. The Trans Am and the GTA both received a fresh
taillamp treatment to complement the new rear wing, and smaller
retractable halogen mini-headlamps have also been added." Hot Rod,
August 1990
For consignment, a 1991 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 1LE showing
111,780 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car was part of
a collection of six 1991 Trans Ams which was 10% of total
production for 1LE in the U.S. This car represents one of 60 in
that configuration as most 1LE models in '91 were Formulas.
Exterior
It's likely less than 10 1991 1LE Trans Ams are black, and this is
one of them. The body design lasted just two years, '91 and '92,
and is favored by Trans Am enthusiasts due to its uncommon
configuration. The tail light treatment in particular, is handsome
and distant, flanking the red lenses with marker lights on the end
and reverse light inboard, with illuminated Pontiac in the center.
The sweeping cladding is where you'll find the Trans Am decals on
the side, now in gold, also found on the rear bumper cover. Hidden
headlights share the hood space with intake vents, all over an
aerodynamic fascia that sets driving lights and fog lights in a
sculpted cove. 16-inch lace style wheels in black carry ZR rated 50
series tires and complete the car's monochromatic and period
appearance. Since paint imperfections have been dealt with with
some respraying, the only imperfections we find are clear coat
issues on the silver rim of the wheels.
Interior
Camel and tan is smartly arranged on the door panels that include
black trim, header, and hardware, including the window crank. The
light brown of the cloth bucket seats has held up nicely and other
than some light compression on the driver's seat, all are in clean
condition. It's back to black up front where the steering wheel
leads to the plastic face plate of the instrument cluster, easy to
read gauges with the Tron-like design on their faces. Gray buttons
adorn the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio in the center stack,
just before the center console begins, housing the black booted
shifter and more grid design on the surface. Light brown carpet
covers the floor and rear cargo area nicely while the fleece-like
headliner shows some age but is clean and intact.
Drivetrain
In '91, the T5 5-speed manual could be mated with the 5.0 liter V8,
and both are here helping produce 230 horsepower. The bay presents
cleanly and in stock configuration with the familiar upper plenum
that looks like an alien is hugging your intake manifold.
Meanwhile, power gets routed to the 10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears
and Positraction, the G80 option that was standard on the 1LE.
Undercarriage
Our consignor states the pinion gear has been replaced recently and
there is some residual oil on the rear differential on an otherwise
clean driver quality bottom with typical surface rust on untreated
metal. An aluminum driveshaft is a 1LE feature, and four wheel disc
brakes have dual piston calipers on 12 inch front rotors as part of
the system. Dual exhaust join together after twin cats, enter the
original muffler in back, then split to become two tailpipes
exiting discreetly with ground facing pipes behind the rear bumper.
Suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a torque
arm in back.
Drive-Ability
F-body comfort means a great driving position with all switchgear
at hand and this bird takes off on our test loop with the eagerness
of a hungry hawk. It handles very well and provides plenty of oomph
from the five liter. The icing on the cake is found as a 100 score
on the functionality test, all systems go! While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Bird watchers take note! This might look like your standard '91
Trans Am, but this happens to be a rare bird. We could have fun
imagining developing the show sign that will accompany the car and
stop people in their tracks, even if the car itself does not, at
first. Pontiac seemed to focus more on the GTA and Formulas at the
time, even sending Formulas to SLP to get the Firehawk treatment
instead of Trans Ams, and with only 25 Firehawks being produced,
this T/A may be the second most rare Firebird for '91.
