"By the end of the small block evolutionary trail, Zora
Arkus-Duntov had the 1970 RPO LT1 cars delivering 370 of the
strongest horses known in any showroom. So, there was the pungent
odor of dej vu when the LS1 engine, descendant of that original
small block, became the C5 Corvette's prime mover in 1997. At last
Corvette traditionalists have what they want; what they have
demanded since the small block Corvette V8 revolution of December,
1955." From the print ad featuring the C5-R and its relation to the
street car.
For consignment, a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a title
verified 13,958 actual miles. This is the proverbial holy grail, a
one owner, uber low mileage C5 Corvette in red over black
configuration.
Exterior
It was the most popular color in Bowling Green in 2000 for a
reason. Torch Red provides an eye popping hue that's impossible to
miss. It covers the long hood, removable targa top, and wedge
shaped profile with perfection. Door handles, side mirrors, and of
course, front and rear bumper covers all wear the shimmering red
complemented by the cross flag emblems, red tail lights, and front
marker lights. 17-inch five spoke wheels are up front, with 18's in
the back, both ends wearing ZR rated 45 series tires with staggered
width and a late 2020 date code. Center exit quad exhaust cap off
this iconic automobile with diffusers built into the rear valance.
The imperfections will likely go unnoticed; it amounts to a small
nick in the lip of a rim.
Interior
Black on black door panels with a rubber coated switch plate on the
driver's door that show no wear where it usually shows up first.
Very minor creasing is found on the black leather bucket seat of
the driver, while the passenger seat presents full and clean. The
black palette continues with the handsome and thick steering wheel,
the dash, and instrument cluster going to the dark side with easy
to read gauges that pop with white numbering and bright red
needles. Rounded buttons adorn the center stack that includes an
AM/FM/CD radio over a factory climate panel, both with digital
green readouts. The shifter is dressed in a black leather boot over
a formed plastic center console and the low pile black carpet is
protected by fitted mats up front but is open for viewing in the
hatch area and it barely looks used. The entire interior looks like
it jumped off the sales brochure pages.
Drivetrain
Attention to detail did not stop with the paint. The engine bay is
just about showroom clean, housing the mighty 5.7 liter LS1 V8
rated at 345 horsepower and mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic
transmission that sends power to the 3.15 gear with Positraction in
back.
Undercarriage
About as close to factory fresh you can have and still have miles
on the car. Even the grease pencil markings are still there! We
note only some residual oil on a front crossmember, but all else is
clean. Dual exhaust runs tandem down the middle before meeting
original equipment mufflers, all in black, including the center
exit tips. Power disc brakes are employed in front and back and
suspension consists of independent unequal length double wishbones
with transverse composite monoleaf springs and monotube shocks.
Drive-Ability
If you're a manual snob, your first thought might be to exclude
this from your list. But the automatic does not disappoint and
delivers the Vette's raucous power with two pedals below and two
hands on the wheel. Add impeccable handling and you've got yourself
a legendary sports car, regardless of who or what is doing the
shifting. This prized possession and its functionality operate
exactly as it should and we ride this red flyer back to the mall to
put under the lights. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
This low mileage, wonderfully preserved C5 is analog when compared
to recent generations, and refreshingly so! It delivers all the
great things Corvettes are known for and has barely been broken in.
We know that feeling when the transporter turns down your street,
and once this epic ride backs out in front of your house, life just
gets a little bit better.
