"Seems as though the simplest things become the most complicated.
Exception, this one. Chevy II by Chevrolet. Simple, straight
forward, and sure. Reliable, economical Chevrolet engines, bolt on
fenders, self cleaning rocker panels. The whole car is engineered
clean, sweet, simple to help uncomplicate your life beautifully and
give you that sure feeling of Chevrolet. Chevy II, the stylish
economy car, by Chevrolet." Script from the 1967 television
commercial which follows a white Chevy II through bucolic country
roads.
For consignment, a 1967 Chevrolet Nova hardtop with a title
verified 102,769 actual miles. This black on red stunner was born
like many Novas at the time, with an inline six cylinder maxing out
at 155 horsepower. Today, it packs a date-correct 327ci V8 just
like the SS version would have carried.
Exterior
Miles deep Tuxedo Black paint finely coats this car with two stage
perfection, augmented by subtle trim down the side of the car and
across the decklid where a red Chevrolet crest pops some color
between the vertical tail lights. In pure 60's fashion, right
angles and straight edges are everywhere including the rear bumper,
the fender edges, and the grated grille. Round headlights designed
with a slight fender overhang are surrounded by a bezel that mimics
the grille design making the front seem like one continuous unit.
14-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels have reflective trim rings and are
wrapped in light staggered tires with an early 2019 date code.
There's a 327 call out on the front fenders, Nova Chevy II on the
rears, and Chevy II on the decklid. A single incidence of bubbling
is the only exterior flaw and along with the paint, the chrome is
in fantastic condition.
Interior
Bright red painted framing surrounds the darker red vinyl door
cards that are neat, clean, and without flaw, and the split bench
also utilizes red vinyl with horizontal stitch patterns with both
the split bench up front and rear bench presenting cleanly. So far,
there's nothing that would exclude this car from any car show
anywhere! 60's simplicity extends to the steering wheel of this
common commuter car of the day, a bright red unit with the horn
configured in the center metal piece that covers the three spokes.
From there, the clean dash has a horizontal speedometer showing
some slight patina, and an AM radio in the center part of the
bright red dash, while a few gauges have been added under the dash.
Red loop carpet covers the floor, bright red plastic lines the
footwells, and yes, a red headliner is up above, all in very good
condition. The trunk is barren, black, and clean.
Drivetrain
A chrome alternator and valve covers dress up the date- correct
327ci V8, topped by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a TH350
3-speed automatic with power routed to the 10 bolt rear axle. The
engine is show worthy but not over the top with chrome and color.
Just good clean fun!
Undercarriage
Whistle clean underneath with no errant fluids nor rust to speak
of. The dual exhaust comes from headers, runs through Thrush
mufflers, then exits tastefully behind each rear wheel. Drum brakes
are on all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs up
front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The 327 comes to life with a healthy growl and we move the column
shifter to Drive and roll through the test loop, crossing our
fingers that she runs as well as she looks. And for the most part,
she does! Handling well and providing good power. We note the car
pulls the right and the horn, radio, and reverse lights are not
functioning. All other items on board work as they should and our
short ride is regrettably over. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
More than 100,000 Novas were produced in 1967 with nearly 1/3 of
them in the configuration this one was born with, that is, the 400
series with the six cylinder engine. This one has been taken to the
next level both mechanically and cosmetically as black paint never
looked this good in 1967. Good Novas don't hang around the mall
very long and we'd consider this one in that category. Black on
red, clean inside and out, and a 327. Better make like a celestial
nova and appear quickly at the mall or on our phone!
