"Run of the mill cars got you feeling grounded? Spread your wings
and soar in a Cutlass S. Want to really send the ordinary into a
tailspin? Order yours with bucket seats, center console, G.T.
stripes! Price? Right down your runway. Every Cutlass sports an
easy to take low price. Escape from the ordinary!" From the 1969
Oldsmobile sale brochure.
For consignment, a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass S convertible showing
13,915 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has been
owned by our consignor since 1991 when it was put into service as a
daily driver for a few thousand miles, then reserved for car shows
and drag racing events.
Exterior
If the yellow respray doesn't get your attention, the added Hurst
Olds style hood scoop certainly will, with its dual nostril intake
rising high over the A-body hood. Black bumpers provide a sharp
contrast to the yellow and also match the canvas soft top, while
15-inch Appliance Wheels carry staggered size tires for that
classic muscle car stance. Dual steel pipes protrude out back and
the tail lights are distinctly Oldsmobile. The top is in great
shape, and the car is missing much of the exterior trim and our
consignor states lots of parts come with the car. Other
imperfections include chips, uneven filler, bubbling on lower
panels and doors, rusty surface on bottom edge, scratches, and
dings.
Interior
A suede like cloth covers the door panels smoothly and simply while
black leather bucket seats of a more modern era occupy the front
showing some use but in overall decent condition. The rear bench
has been redone according to our consignor and is more of a stock
configuration. A GT steering wheel presents to the driver with some
surface rust on the spokes, leading to the standard, three
chambered instrument cluster in black plastic and the mid panel
contains the vent levers but no radio. There are some added gauges
under the dash and a B&M shifter perched on the transmission
tunnel over black loop carpet in decent shape. The trunk is barren
and has some typical surface rust.
Drivetrain
Here we have a 350ci V8 from 1973/1974 with a Holley 4-barrel over
an Edelbrock intake manifold. It's mated to a TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission that routes power to the 12 bolt axle.
Chrome valve covers dress up an otherwise standard engine bay and
headers are on board to start the exhaust process.
Undercarriage
Plenty of patina in the form of surface rust, some residual oil,
and a bit of sludge, but overall, in decent condition. Drum brakes
are supplied to all four wheels and the dual exhaust flows through
an X pipe and FlowMaster mufflers their way to the back. Suspension
is configured as coil springs up front and a 4 link with coil
springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The trusty 350 comes to life without hesitation and we move the
B&M shifter to Drive and circle this yellow Olds around our
test loop where it idles smoothly and handles well, though our
tires are from 1993, so we're taking it real slow and simply
checking functionality. The brakes feel spongy, and a few things
are not working including the horn, heater blower, and reverse
lights. All other operational items work as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you grew up in the 80's a project car like this was often owned
in our circle of friends. We drove it like we stole it and then
spent weekends putting it back together. We didn't really care how
it looked, (they never looked this good!), as long as it got us to
school and to Main Street cruises on weekends. We were never
fortunate enough to have a convertible, so this car has a lot of
potential for fun, as is, or brought up to the next level of
aesthetics and performance. Totally up to you, the sky's the limit,
especially with the top down!
