There's a quiet subculture you might not be aware of that's
incredibly energized and has been for many years. We'll call S-10
nation and if you don't think this is a large and enthusiastic
group, head over to Truck Nationals at Carlisle each year where you
will find hundreds of S10 diehards, loyal to the model in whatever
configuration they were produced.
For consignment, a 1996 Chevrolet S10 4x4 short bed pickup with a
title verified 33,311 actual miles. Given the time capsule status
and low mileage of this truck, we encourage you to speed read
through this description and then call to register your interest,
because once S10 Nation gets wind of it, it'll be gone...like the
wind.
Exterior
Looking great in two stage Black, this truck is true to its 4x4
nomenclature and sits high on the 15-inch wheels that carry
235/75R15 tires. A chrome grille takes in the single headlights and
the chrome grille embeds the marker lights as the '94-'97 second
gen S-10's present with some softer curves than the previous
generation. That roundness is also noted as the fender circles up
to the hood, and the tail has a slightly convex curve to it, here
with a smooth roll pan and dual exhaust split wide. A side step
bar, bug guard, and smooth snapping tonneau cover add to the period
appeal of this truck while front tow hooks and sizable side mirrors
contribute to its practicality. Other than some minor clear coat
peeling on a wheel, the outside is free of imperfections.
Interior
The door panels are constructed of gray plastic and vinyl with a
tweed insert and color matched hardware, along with integrated
storage and a speaker and both present as showroom fresh.
Continuing with the black and gray tweed are the bucket seats in
very good condition and a sporty headrest. Still conforming to work
truck utilitarian design, the dash ahead of the charcoal steering
wheel is simple and standard with gray plastic switchgear at the
sides, dials on the A/C panel, and an integrated AM/FM/CD player in
the center stack. The shifter is on the column but the transfer
case selector is on the floor in the plastic formed center console
with room for cups, spare change, and general use. Tight gray
carpet covers the floor and rubber mats are there to protect it,
while the bed is protected by a full, GM-branded plastic liner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood we find a clean 4.3 liter V6, fuel injected and
rated at 180 horsepower. It's mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic
transmission which in standard drive, sends power to a 10 bolt axle
with 3.42 gears.
Undercarriage
Other than some air produced oxidation to metal surfaces, the
underside presents close to showroom fresh with no oil and surface
rust, minor as it is, reserved for the leaf springs only. Even the
spare tire and wheels are clean! The exhaust splits from the
MagnaFlow muffler to become two tips at its terminus while power
brakes are found on all four wheels, including disc up front and
drums in the back. Suspension is equipped as torsion bars up front
and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
We step up into this clean S-10 and if not spectacularly clean,
we'd want to flog it over dirt mounds and rocky trails. The cabin
is comfortable and more ergonomic than first gen S-10s and the
materials are clean, switches accessible. The truck tracks straight
and has fine acceleration and provides great visibility. We note
the A/C is not working but all other functions operate as they
should on this low mileage pickup. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If this is not the nicest second gen 4x4 S-10 around, we'd be
surprised. It really is show worthy and would be a huge hit in
Carlisle or anywhere else cars gather! S-10's were used and put
away wet, so to live 30 years with barely a scratch is rare and
unique. Some will argue whether a '96 S-10 is classic, but we can
all agree one in this condition is special. Okay, we're done
talking. Your turn to call!
