The BMW E24 M6, sold in the U.S. from 1987 to 1989, was the
flagship of the first-generation 6-Series lineup. Known in Europe
as the M635CSi, it featured the race-bred S38 straight-six engine,
the successor to the legendary M1 M88, for the American market,
producing approximately 256 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque
through a five-speed manual transmission. While slightly detuned
compared to the European M88/3 version, it still delivered
impressive performance for its time, reaching 60 mph in under six
seconds and topping out around 150 mph. The M6 stood apart with
aggressive bodywork, BBS wheels, big brakes, and a sport-tuned
suspension that sharpened its grand-touring character. Inside, it
featured leather upholstery, power options, and a driver-focused
layout that struck a balance between luxury and performance. With
only 30-percent of these set for the United States out of a total
of 5,855 worldwide, the E24 M6 remains one of BMW's most desirable
modern classics, blending 1980s style with motorsport DNA.
Finished in Royal Blue over a Lotus White interior, this M6
completed production at the Dingolfing production plant on 17 July
1987. The car was specified with a leather steering wheel, smoker
package, electrically adjustable seats with memory, and rear air
conditioning. The CARFAX report begins in June 1991, showing the
car was registered in New York with 32,209 miles. The car was
relocated to California a month later, in July. The M6 spent time
in Nevada and later returned to California, where it passed an
emissions inspection on 5 June 2025, at 115,938 miles.
Displaying just over 116,000 miles at cataloging, the M6 has
remained a coveted choice among M collectors to this day. With
excellent driving dynamics, an engaging five-speed manual
transmission, and the ability to conquer continents with ease, they
have been and continue to remain one of the most rewarding BMWs of
the 1980s and a favorite among marque enthusiasts.
