Chassis No. LCSC57B Engine No. B28CS Launched in 1962, the
Rolls-Royce Silver
Cloud III and its Bentley S3 sibling marked the final iteration of
this
celebrated series. The standard steel saloon received revised
styling, and for
those discerning and wealthy enough to afford them, coachbuilders
continued to
offer bespoke coachwork options. Among the most striking was a
two-door Park
Ward design by young Norwegian Vilhelm Koren, defined by a crisp
continuous
front-to-rear wing line. First appearing on the Bentley S2
Continental in 1959,
it was offered on additional models beginning with the Cloud III
and S3 in 1962.
The refinements of the series and exclusivity of custom coachwork
make these
among the most sought-after of all post-war Rolls-Royce models.
Finished
elegantly in dark green against natural leather, this fabulous
Silver Cloud III,
chassis LCSC57B, was built for the U.S. market as a factory left
hand drive
example with coachwork by Mulliner Park Ward. Factory records
specify a Made in
England name plate, MPH speedometer, Blaupunkt New Yorker radio,
power door
windows, electric heating and demisting, and air conditioning.
Supplied to
Mulliner Park Ward on 5 April 1965, it was delivered to Harry Cooke
Cushing IV
six months later on the first of October, finished Glasso Sand
(2320664/ME) over
Beige leather. Mr. Cushing took delivery in London, but also lived
in Midtown
Manhattan and in Rome, where he kept his beloved polo ponies. It
appears to have
spent its first two decades in the New York area as it was
advertised in the May
1985 issue of?The Flying Lady?by Ed Jurist of The Vintage Car Store
in Nyack,
New York. The next owner was Lane Slate of Vail, Arizona. John
Bradley of Studio
City, California, acquired the car from Slate on 5 March 1997.
Retained in his
care for a decade, it went from one large Rolls-Royce collection to
another when
it moved to Kenneth Johnson's garage in Issaquah, Washington.
Restored to its
current livery along the way, LCSC57B joined an overseas collection
where it
remained for about a decade, before returning to the United States,
joining the
Lone Star Sports Car Collection in 2023. Subsequently treated to
light
refurbishment, it is beautifully presented today with a warm
character and
gently mellowed restoration. A rare and stylish automobile, this
elegant
Rolls-Royce coupe will no doubt provide ample enjoyment to its
next, fortunate
owner.
