Over its impressive 15-year production run, Porsche's now-legendary
356 grew from Volkswagen-derived origins into one of the most
celebrated sports cars of all time. Developed and refined at a
seemingly relentless pace, the 356 steadily evolved to keep Porsche
at the forefront of the sports car marketplace.
The 356 B (the third generation after the 356 and 356 A), arrived
in late 1959 with the restyled "T5" body. The exotic four-cam
models notwithstanding, the hot new pushrod option was the Super
90, boasting a 9:1 compression ratio, Solex PII-4 carburetors, and
90 horsepower-a welcome jump up from the previous 1600 Super. In
September 1961, Porsche redesigned the 356 again, designating it
"T6," with a new front-end design which carried through to the end
of production in 1965.
For many, the 356 B represents the "sweet spot" for 356s-thoroughly
improved and refined, but still with that endearingly light and
nimble feel. Hailing from 1962 and featuring the punchy 1600 Super
90 engine, this 356 B Coupe is a charming example of the breed. The
accompanying Kardex warranty card shows a production date of
November 1961, making this an early T6 model-and one of the first
of the Super 90s, according to Dr. Brett Johnson's data. Leaving
Zuffenhausen finished in Champagnergelb (Champagne Yellow) over a
Black interior, this U.S.-market car, delivered via Raffay & Co. of
Hamburg, Germany, was well optioned from new with head rests, arm
rests, Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, antenna, fog lights, chromed
steel wheels, Coco floor mats, and luggage rack. The engine and
transmission serial numbers listed on the Kardex and an inspection
of the car confirms this as a fully matching-numbers Super 90.
Offered here in a distinctive color scheme of black with a
contrasting bronze roof and tan leather interior, this Super 90 is
undoubtedly a fine choice for rallies and events. Details like the
original Blaupunkt radio, luggage rack, period-style suitcases,
chrome wheels, and headlamp stone guards offer charm, while the
Super 90 engine ensures outstanding grunt to make light work of
challenging roads.
