Americans have long had a love affair with convertibles,
particularly those
designed for relaxed cruising on our country's seemingly endless
highways and
boulevards. Max Hoffman, the highly influential U.S. importer of
European cars,
knew this all too well and persuaded Mercedes-Benz management to
consider a
simpler, less costly companion to the exotic 300 SL Roadster.
Hoffman's
successful track record meant Mercedes-Benz took his advice and
created the 190
SL, a stylish, four-cylinder convertible inspired by its big
sibling but at a
more attainable price. Utilizing the floor pan and mechanical
componentry from
the Ponton saloon, costs were kept in check without sacrificing the
vault-like
quality that Mercedes-Benz buyers expected.
Just as Hoffman predicted, Americans fell head-over-heels for the
stylish German
roadster, and it is easy to see why when viewing this exquisite
1959 example.
Classically finished in dark red over tan leather upholstery, this
car was
imported to the United States from Germany by the vendor in 2022
and has
subsequently been kept in excellent order. Thoroughly restored by
the renowned
marque experts at Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors, the car presents
beautifully
throughout with a high level of authenticity. From its deep,
lustrous paintwork
and ample chrome trim, to its proper color-keyed wheels adorned
with matching
hubcaps and whitewall Michelins, it has a marvelous road presence.
A vehicle
valuation report from 2022 notes the car to have been restored to a
high
standard and that it is a finely finished example. It also noted
the car was a
strong mechanical performer. An add-on luggage rack with a
period-style tweed
and leather duffel adds a touch of touring elegance.
The 1.9-liter inline-four engine is highly detailed with yellow
zinc-plated
hardware and faithfully reproduced labels and decals, and it
breathes through
the correct twin Solex PHH44 carburetors. Inside, there are ample
swaths of
lovely tan leather, square-weave carpet, and excellent chrome
detailing. An
aftermarket stereo head unit maintains the 1950s ambience but with
modern
functionality. For those with touring in mind, a beautiful set of
fitted
luggage-trimmed in matching tan leather-resides in the trunk, along
with a tool
roll.
Looking ready to cruise the boulevard or tackle weekend tours on
your favorite
roads, this exquisite 190 SL fits the bill, melding unmatched
Mercedes-Benz
quality, iconic mid-century design, and a superb restoration in one
stylish
roadster.
