Spanning an impressive 15-year production run, the Porsche 356
earned its place
as one of the greatest sports cars of all time. Relentless
development saw it
grow from its humble Volkswagen-derived origins to the exotic,
130-horsepower
race-bred four-cam Carrera. The 356's final transformation came in
1963, with
the T6-bodied 356 C. It introduced numerous refinements to the
steering and
suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and 12-volt electrics. Two
1,600-cc engines
were offered, either the standard 75 horsepower (DIN) or the hotter
SC with
higher compression and counterweighted crankshaft making 95 DIN
horsepower. As
the ultimate evolution of the pushrod-engine 356, the SC is now
highly
collectible, representing 15 years of continuous, fervent
development.
Wonderfully presented in its as-delivered shade of Signalrot
(Signal Red) over
beige upholstery, this desirable 356 SC Cabriolet with coachwork by
Reutter is
an outstanding example of the ultimate pushrod 356. The
accompanying Kardex
shows this car was completed in January 1965 and delivered to Hans
Kahrmann of
Fulda, Germany. By the numbers, the engine serial number (821644)
corresponds to
factory records as a late-1964-production SC 1600, confirming this
car as a true
SC.
Prior to joining the Lone Star Sports Car Collection, it was owned
by a
Florida-based enthusiast with many significant 1950s German sports
cars to his
name. But as other cars came and went, his beloved 356 SC remained
until his
passing. Acquired by the current caretaker in 2020, this fully
matching numbers
example was entrusted to a Texas-based specialist for service, an
engine-out
reseal, engine bay detailing, and rally preparation. Gorgeous
Borrani bi-metal
alloy wheels and knock-off hubs were fitted to the tune of $14,500
in parts
alone. The cabin, restored in attractive tan leather, features
custom fitted
luggage behind the seats, and there's a useful luggage rack
complete with
leather duffel for extended tours. A Porsche-branded tool roll
resides in the
boot should you encounter the unexpected out on the road.
As evidenced by the roundels, this 356 participated in the 2023
Copperstate
1000, for which the versatile Reutter Cabriolet coachwork and
punchy 1,600-cc SC
engine make it particularly well-suited. If you're seeking a
classic Porsche to
enjoy to the fullest, look no further than this marvelous
example.
