In 2005, Jon Wilhelm of Wilhelm Motor Works secured a contract with
Carroll Shelby to produce GT350C ("Continuation") and GT350CR
("Continuation Retractable") Mustangs based on 1964-1970 models.
Working with Mustangs Plus in Stockton, California, the "C" cars
advanced first, with a prototype targeted for unveiling at the 2005
SEMA Show, followed shortly thereafter by the "CR" concept with
Shelby's endorsement. However, by the time the agreement ended,
only a handful of these cars were built, making them unique
Shelby-endorsed prototypes that never reached series
production.
Finished in House of Kolor TruBlue and Tangelo-a nod to Carroll
Shelby's favored Gulf Racing livery-this 1964 Ford Mustang
underwent a bare-metal, rotisserie transformation to its GT350CR
guise by The RestoMod Shop at Mustangs Plus, with final assembly
completed by Showcase Rods and Customs in Salt Lake City. The
retractable roof system was the work of Ben Smith, a former Ford
engineer who designed the pioneering retractable hardtop of the
1957-59 Skyliner. The manually operated carbon-fiber hardtop
features custom billet aluminum hardware and is concealed neatly
beneath a custom decklid punctuated by a ducktail spoiler, also
executed entirely in carbon fiber.
Under the hood sits a modified 302 cubic-inch V8 producing
approximately 350 horsepower, featuring polished aluminum
components, JBA "Shorty" titanium headers, and an active shaker
hood scoop. The drivetrain comprises a Ford AOD (automatic
overdrive) transmission paired with an eight-inch Currie
limited-slip rear axle. Four-wheel SSBC disc brakes provide
stopping power, while 18-inch American Racing Torque Thrust II
wheels wear Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber. The striking custom interior
blends blue and black leather with a body-color, shaved metal
dashboard, embroidered "Wilhelm" logos, a wood-rim steering wheel,
Old Air Products air conditioning, and a modern stereo.
This Mustang Club of America Grand National Champion retains its
California black plate, having never been licensed elsewhere, and
offers Shelby devotees an opportunity to acquire a rare
Shelby-sanctioned prototype seldom available on the open
market.
