As noted on the original service agreement issued by Tom Casavely
Ford of St. Louis, Missouri, this 1973 Ford Mustang was sold new to
Richard C. Abbott on 6 April 1973. The car was specified in Light
Yellow Gold over a White Sebring Knit interior with Corinthian
vinyl bucket seats to match the White power convertible top. Power
was supplied by a 351 cu-in Cleveland V8 mated to a Cruise-O-Matic
automatic transmission. The Convertible was further optioned with
white sidewall tires, power steering, a center console, bumper rub
strips, SelectAire air conditioning, AM radio, appearance
protection group, tinted glass, and wheel covers. The financing
form shows the total purchase price was $3,411.36.
An application for a Missouri title shows that the car was sold to
Florence G. Nolte eight years later, on 30 April 1981. An approval
certificate from the Missouri motor vehicle inspection shows the
car had accumulated 45,892 miles by April 1982. From there, the car
was purchased by then-Governor of Missouri and future U.S. Attorney
General John Ashcroft on 22 April 1985. Ashcroft was no Mustang
novice. He had been lusting after the model from its debut since he
first caught sight of one while attending the University of Chicago
Law School in 1965. Governor, Senator, and then USAG Ashcroft
retained the car for over 20 years, until it was sold on 12
November 2006. The car left the Show Me State for the first time
when it was acquired by Thomas S. Hoover of Roanoke, Virginia,
entering the Passport Collection. The car remained in the
collection until April 2025, when the current owner purchased
it.
Today, the car remains in largely original condition apart from a
repaint in its originally specified shade of rare Light Yellow Gold
and a replacement convertible top. Displaying just under 69,000
miles at cataloging, this mileage is believed to be original. In
addition to its noteworthy previous ownership, it boasts an
impressive history file that dates to Day One with its original
purchase paperwork and its rare original specification documented
by its Deluxe Marti Report.
