In the history of the autoverse, few cars are as awe-inspiring as
this numbers-matching 1970 Plymouth Superbird. A heavily modified
homologation model of the already fast Road Runner, only 1,935
units were built in total. Of these, just 408 of them were created
with a 440 Six-Pack and an automatic transmission, making this car
a true treasure find. We're told by the current owner the Vitamin C
paint is original, and even if it's not, this huge-winged
racecar-for-the-street is sure to cure whatever ails you.
Inside, we find a clean and stock black vinyl interior. A
wood-grain-trimmed center console separates a pair of high-back
bucket seats, while a power-assisted, three-spoke steering wheel
sits just ahead of a 150 mph speedometer and the always beloved
tic-toc-tach. An AM radio, heat, and defrost round out the
amenities in this purpose-built machine, and if those are enough,
this probably isn't the car for you.
The real entertainment come from under that expansive hood. A
numbers-matching 440 cubic-inch Super Commando overhead valve V-8
engine. Thanks to its six-pack, consisting of three Holley 2-barrel
carburetors mounted on top of its stock intake manifold, this big
block monster was capable of producing a very conservatively
advertised 390 horsepower at 4,700 rpm and 490 pound-feet of torque
at 3,200 rpm. That power is routed through an A727 Torqueflite
three-speed automatic transmission before reaching its 8.75-inch
rear end.
