For the Beach Boys to write a hit song about an engine, it had to
be a special motor attached to a special kind of car. With just
71,837 acutal miles on its odometer, this 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS
409, decked out in a beautiful Daytona Blue repaint, stretches out
over its two-door coupe configuration, showcasing its straight
lines, shimmering chrome, and dual-triplet taillight
arrangement.
Inside, we find a mostly stock restored Medium Blue vinyl interior.
A center console separates the dual bucket seats, while the
old-school two-spoke, power-assisted steering wheel sits just ahead
of a 6,000 rpm tachometer and horizontal 120 mph speedometer. A
trio of auxiliary gauges sits under the dashboard, while the
sliding HVAC controls and an AM/FM radio sit against a shimmering
dashboard panel.
Under that expansive hood, we find out what all the fuss is about.
Centered inside a clean engine bay sits a 409 cubic-inch V-8
engine. Part of Chevy's famous W-series big block motor family,
this 409 sports a set of orange Offenhauser valve covers and an
aluminum radiator. Topped with a pair of four-barrel Edelbrock
carburetors, spent gases are expelled via a true-dual exhaust setup
capped off with a set of chrome exhaust tips. Power is routed
through a tried-and-true Muncie four-speed manual transmission
before heading out to the GM 55P dropout-style rear end that
transfers those ponies to the pavement through a set of beautiful,
fourteen-inch steel wheels sporting SS wheel covers, shod in
215/75R-14 tires.
