Chassis No. 824B19445? Engine No. 329266 Pontiac's revolutionary
GTO was?born in
the wake of GM's company-wide ban on motorsport activities. Pontiac
engineers,
led by John Z. DeLorean, skirted company rules via a $295 option on
the
mid-sized Pontiac Tempest LeMans, a car officially limited to 330
cu-in engines.
The GTO option's 389 cu-in V8 transformed the mild-mannered Tempest
into a
tire-shredding beast, with just the right balance of visual touches
to toughen
it up. Regarded as the genesis of the Muscle Car era, it sparked
one of the most
colorful, exciting periods in the American car industry. Finished
in its
original color scheme of Nocturne Blue with a white top and
Parchment interior,
this 1964 Pontiac GTO Convertible is a splendid example of the
seminal muscle
car. With styling overseen by Bill Mitchell, these early GTOs are
notably
handsome cars, especially in darker shades and dressed with this
car's "spinner"
wheel covers, red-line tires, and signature slash-cut tailpipes
which hint at
what lurks beneath the hood. Accompanying Pontiac Historical
Society (PHS)
documents verify this factory GTO came factory-equipped with the
optional
Tri-Power carburetors, 3.23 Safe-T-Track axle and a three-speed
manual, which
has subsequently been updated to a more useful four-speed, topped
with a Hurst
shifter. The restoration remains visually crisp and inviting, with
light signs
of use evident on close inspection. It is accompanied by an
original owner's
guide, warranty card, folding top manual, and a spare tire in the
detailed
trunk. Arguably one of the most important muscle cars of all time,
this striking
GTO offered from a prominent Southern California collection where
it has been
cherished since 2007 rekindles the glory days of the muscle car era
and
represents a must-have for any well-rounded collection.
