had a love affair with convertibles, particularly those designed for relaxed
cruising on our country's seemingly endless highways and boulevards. Max
Hoffman, the highly influential U.S. importer of European cars, knew this all
too well and persuaded Mercedes-Benz management to consider a simpler, less
costly companion to the exotic 300 SL Roadster. Hoffman's successful track
record meant Mercedes-Benz took his advice and created the 190 SL, a stylish,
four-cylinder convertible inspired by its big sibling but at a more attainable
price. Utilizing the floor pan and mechanical componentry from the Ponton
saloon, costs were kept in check without sacrificing the vault-like quality that
Mercedes-Benz buyers expected. Just as Hoffman predicted, Americans fell
