The BMW 2002 Turbo marked a bold new chapter-not just for BMW, but
for European automotive design as a whole. As the continent's first
turbocharged production car, it elevated the already esteemed 02
series of sport compact executive cars into a new stratum of
performance and innovation. Unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor
Show, the 2002 Turbo stood apart. Its wide fiberglass fender
flares, bold air dam, and rear spoiler proclaimed its purpose,
while the new twin-scroll turbocharger attached to the
fuel-injected 2002 tii-sourced four-cylinder provided power to
match. It was accompanied either by a Getrag 232 four-speed manual
transmission unique to the variant or the Getrag 235/5 close-ratio
five-speed manual that was optional on the 2002 tii. A larger
radiator and oil cooler were standard, as were new ventilated front
disc brakes and larger rear drums. All 2002 Turbos featured BMW
Motorsport decals and stripes on the car's flanks and air dam,
while red trim adorned the interior including on the new Rentrop
sport seats and the new instrument panel, which featured an added
boost gauge. Produced in limited numbers and offered exclusively in
Polaris Silver or Chamonix White, the 2002 Turbo remains a
cornerstone in BMW's performance legacy.
According to its BMW Birth Certificate, this 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo is
finished in its original colors of Polaris Silver with a Black
upholstered interior. It is equipped with the optional five-speed
manual transmission. It was most recently owned by prominent Dutch
collector Olav Glasius, who purchased the car from Italy several
years ago. The 2002 was imported to the United States in August
2025 and is now offered with 79,705 kilometers or 49,526 miles at
cataloging. As a low-mileage example, this 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo
offers the distinct opportunity to own one of the marque's most
celebrated icons: the first turbocharged European production car
and a far more focused driving machine than the standard sedan on
which it is built.
