In 1974 Porsche released upon the world via the Paris Auto Show one
of the most iconic variants of the 911 ever created: the 911 Turbo.
Turbo cars designated with "930", Porsche began experimenting with
turbocharged technology in their late 60s and early 70s racing
career in notable cars such as the Porsche 917/10 and 917/30. In
order to homologate the new turbocharged race cars, 934, 934.5 and
later the 935, Porsche brought a piece of the racing action to the
streets for those wanting some extra power from their air-cooled
vehicles. Since then, the "930" Turbo is one of the most
sought-after air-cooled Porsches, combining power, aggressive
styling, and a rewarding driving experience. 2025 marks the 51st
anniversary of the iconic and legendary Porsche icon, reaching
critical acclaim across the world as one of the all-time greatest
sports cars.
This 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo was spec'd in the special order Porsche
paint color - Platinum Metallic and with a rare Dark Brown leather
interior. The car reportedly spent a significant amount of time in
Arizona as a part of a larger Porsche collection before being
purchased by Lonnie Davis from Austin, Texas. Davis purchased the
car with only 6,800 miles on the odometer in approximately 2003 and
kept the Turbo in their collection for 10 years, before being
acquired by its most recent caretaker in 2013 with only 11,569
miles.
The most recent caretaker, a significant Porsche collector in
Austin, Texas,, spent a considerable amount of resources and time
ensuring that the Turbo received good mechanical care with service
records accompanying the car back to early 2013. Upon purchasing
the Turbo, it was subsequently treated to an extensive mechanical
servicing that included remedying oil leaks by the removal of the
engine to reseal turning into a full tear down, brake system
overhaul, fuel system service, shifting alignment, new tires, and
other auxiliary items. This work continued in 2014, going through a
complete reseal of the engine and restoring exterior components
along the way. Cylinder heads were removed and restored along with
new valve stems. Work orders indicate that during this time the
transmission was completely resealed, a new flywheel, clutch, and
release bearing were installed, and new axle shafts were also
installed. Other minor items were addressed such as seat
adjustment, sunroof adjustment, vehicle alignment, and others.
Overall, the Turbo received $29,959.79 worth of service work
starting in March of 2013 and completing on August 12th, 2014.
After the Turbo's extensive service, the car was treated to regular
service over the next 11 years, with oil changes and brake fluid
changes regularly with other minor service, including new tires in
June of 2024 with 12,582 miles on the odometer.
Upon arriving at Canepa, the Turbo was inspected thoroughly both
cosmetically and mechanically as a part of the "Canepa Difference"
process. The car was entered into Canepa's system and its process
began. Canepa started with the cleaning of the underside of the
911, cleaning the Turbo's surfaces by hand to ensure that original
finishes and components remained in good condition. After being
cleaned underneath, the Platinum Metallic paint received a
multi-stage foam pad polish, enhancing the luster and depth of the
highly original factory paint. The original Dark Brown leather
interior was also detailed with the same attention, with all
leather delicately cleaned, carpet vacuumed, and glass polished.
Afterwards the Turbo was moved into Canepa's technician area where
it was mechanically inspected, revealing a well-maintained 930, no
doubt in part of the effort of the last caretaker's fastidious
attention to detail. With a clean bill of health, the 911 Turbo was
complete. Now ready for its next caretaker to drive off with this
Turbo into the sunset on a road trip, short or long, this 1977
Porsche 911 Turbo is a prime example of Porsche's turbo
prowess.
