The 1970 Mach 1 was one of the last classic Mustangs. It held true to the spirit of the original concept while its fastback body style, black accents, and unique trim set it apart from others. This genuine Mach 1 is a beautiful restored example of what made these cars so great. And with an awesome 351W stroked to 393ci, a 5-speed transmission, and 4-wheel disc brakes it offers some great performance upgrades as well.
This beautiful car has a fantastic straight body that has been professionally repainted in its original red color. The 1970-only rocker panel trim has also been refinished and looks excellent (this is often missing and hard to find). All chrome and trim is in great condition too. The Mach 1 graphics, hood twist locks, and unique tail panel add to the car’s great looks. Note that per the Marti report this example was not built with a spoiler for a sleeker look at the back. The car sits on modern Torq Thrust style wheels with 235/45ZR17 tires in front and 255/45ZR18 in back.
This Mach 1 is a factory M-code (351 4v) 4-speed car. But things have been “tweaked” since then which is apparent the moment you turn the key. The engine is a real brute with loads of great parts. The 351W block has been bored and stroked to 393ci. It was assembled with ARP fasteners and uses a Melling high-volume oil pump. The rotating assembly is from Eagle with a Professional Products balancer while the aluminum heads are from Dart. The hydraulic roller camshaft operates chromoly pushrods and roller rocker arms. There is also an Edelbrock aluminum intake topped by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. Ignition uses an MSD Pro Billet distributor and 6AL box. You will also find a March aluminum pulley system and a Monte Carlo bar under the hood. Cooling uses a high-flow water pump, aluminum radiator, and a Derale electric fan. Finally, the exhaust uses coated headers and an aptly-named American Thunder system from Flowmaster.
The engine is bolted to a McLeod scattershield followed by a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission for better shifting and high-speed performance. This feeds the 9-inch limited-slip rear end with Strange axles. A driveshaft hoop is also present for safety. The braking system offers 4-wheel discs. The suspension is full of new components and features Grab-A-Track coils in front. Note this car is not for the timid; it has lots of power, a healthy clutch, and manual steering / brakes. The focus is on performance, just as the Ford intended.
The interior has also been restored starting with the correct style black bucket seats and woodgrain dashboard inserts. An aftermarket steering wheel and Hurst shifter have been installed along with oil pressure and water temperature gauges. There is also a digital AM/FM radio that fits in the factory opening. All lighting works including the fog lamps and hood scoop turn signal indicators. The horn, wipers, washers, heater, defroster, and parking brake are all functional too.
This car has a lot going for it. It is a real Mach 1 with excellent cosmetics, a wicked drivetrain, and many nice upgrades. But it is also a blast to drive and offers an exciting Mustang experience.
