While the term "Biarritz" used to mean "Convertible" on Cadillac models in 1956-61, the name was revived in 1976 and referred to a luxury trim level on the Eldorado coupe. While that may cause some confusion, what is not confusing is Cadillac’s tradition of creating luxurious automobiles. To that end, the 10th generation (1979-85) Eldorado — built on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado — featured a more compact design than its predecessors yet retained the brand’s signature elegance.
The 1984 Cadillac Eldorado, which was offered as a coupe and once again (starting in ’84) a convertible, could be had with a 4.1-liter V8 or an optional 5.7-liter diesel V8. It also had independent rear suspension and electronic level control. Inside, the Eldo boasted digital instrumentation, electronic climate control, and plush leather interior.
The original owner of this meticulously maintained 1984 Eldorado chose the aforementioned Biarritz trim, which added upscale features like a brushed stainless-steel roof over the front passenger compartment — a nod to the 1957-58 Eldorado Brougham — as well as a heavily padded landau vinyl top with opera lights on the rear roof section, chrome accents, wire wheel covers, pillowed and tufted leather seating, and a full suite of power features.
