This isn't just any 1958 Volkswagen Beetle-it's a wolf hiding in
Wolfsburg's clothing. Originally bought new by a Kansas dairy as a
humble fleet car, this Bug once hustled milk routes with a fleet
number and dairy logo still ghosted into the paint like a tattoo
from its working days. The factory L41 Black paint is still on it,
paired with blood-red original seats and panels, fresh black
carpet, and a new headliner. It looks vintage on the surface, but
under the skin it's a different animal.
The factory 36-horse flat four is long gone, replaced with a
snarling 165hp EJ25 Subaru boxer out of an Impreza RS. The harness
lives in a vintage suitcase behind the rear seat, where you'll also
find the OBD2 port feeding a BlueDriver scanner-real-time
diagnostics at your fingertips through your phone. Up front, the
original fuel tank was reworked to house a Subaru fuel pump, with
an aluminum radiator and cooling fan hidden in the spare tire well
breathing air from beneath the apron. A coolant reservoir rides
shotgun with the tank.
The drivetrain got the same treatment: an Empi Bugpack billet short
throw shifter clicks through a built IRS gearbox with a tall .77
fourth for cruising. Braking comes courtesy of a dual circuit
master, front discs on wide 5s, and Thing-sourced rears. The stance
is height adjustable up front, and lighting is upgraded all around
with LEDs and a period-correct reverse light that snaps on when you
slam it into gear.
It's part survivor, part sleeper, and part street-brawler-a
black-and-red time capsule packing modern muscle where nobody
expects it.
