For Sale: 1987 Buick Regal in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1987 Buick Regal Turbo T Hardtop

Since Buick dropped the powertrain designation of T-Type for 1987, you could order a Buick Regal with the Y56 "T" package on a normally aspirated V6 engine and get touring suspension, a sport steering wheel, and some other suspension, steering, and cosmetic upgrades. Add the LC2 package, and now you get the legendary turbocharged and intercooled engine in a car that might be black, white, rosewood, brown, burgundy, or blue. Same drivetrain as the Grand National without the Darth Vadar treatment!

For consignment, a 1987 Buick Regal Turbo T hardtop with a title verified 64,050 actual miles and a numbers matching drivetrain. This car has the uncommon interior configuration of a split bench seat and column shifter, making it all that much stealthier! When government agencies, including the FBI, put turbo Regals into service, they would almost always use this bench seat/column shift set up.

Exterior
Known commonly as burgundy or maroon, this T wears a coat of Dark Red Metallic and retains the chrome bumpers, grille, headlight bezels, taillight trim, and window trim. The 15-inch turbine wheels certainly add some sportiness to the profile but the Regal crest on the C-pillar, side molding, wheel opening trim, and pinstripe along the shoulder line bring it back to commuter car status, or sleeper as we like to call it! The car also lacks emblems from the power bulge on the hood for a cleaner and less obvious look, while the decklid does wear the correct badging and the subtle T emblem is on the front fenders. Imperfections include a crack on the nose piece, oxidation on the wheels, chipping paint on a door edge, and some drops on the roof.

Interior
Burgundy dresses the door in typical configuration layering velour, plastic armrests, and carpeted lowers with electric switches for locks and windows and the door pull colored to match and both doors are in fantastic condition. Where most turbo Regals had bucket seats, some were fitted with this 70/30 split, in burgundy velour and a central pull down armrest. The front seats and rear bench are in excellent condition and a perfect match for the burgundy carpet below. Up front, the leather wrapped steering wheel fronts a somewhat basic instrument cluster, not that different from base Regals of the time and GM even used the parts bin 85 mph speedometer! There is a pair of light bars not found on mere mortal Buicks and they're here to indicate RPM's and turbo boost. Enthusiasts will tell you those gauges are not perfectly accurate, but everyone agrees it's a super cool feature/ Meanwhile, the center stack holds the AM/FM/Cassette radio and standard A/C levers over the open floor and transmission tunnel, flanked by carpeted mats with the Turbo 6 logo. The foam backed headliner and visors are in very nice condition and the trunk contains the correct, clean black carpeted mat and space saver spare that retains the cardboard cover so often lost.

Drivetrain
Clean and stock appearing is the numbers matching 3.8 liter 231ci turbocharged and intercooled V6, fuel injected and rated at 245 horsepower. It is mated to the numbers matching 200R4 4-speed automatic that sends power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears and the desirable optional Positraction. The insulator pad is in great shape.

Undercarriage
Clean driver quality underneath with the typical surface rust and a dry environment. The dual exhaust flows through Super Turbo mufflers and exits behind the rear wheels with straight pipes. Power disc brakes occupy the front while power drums live in back and suspension consists of coil springs in front and 4 link with coil springs in back.

Drive-Ability
The column shifter feels like Dad's LeSabre, but step on the gas, and all likeness disappears in an air induced rush that sets you back into the bench seat like no other Buick in history. You don't have to floor it to start feeling the boost and we otherwise feather this car around the test loop where its square stance tracks straight and handles better than your average G-body. We note the A/C is not working but all other functions on board this analog rocket operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Less than 8,000 Regals with the T package and Turbo package were produced making it much more rare than the 1987 Grand National of which more than 20,000 were made. So, not only will you join a rather exclusive group, but you'll have one of the legendary sleepers in the muscle car world. With mid 80's Regals and other G-bodies quickly disappearing from the everyday road landscape, they have now reached classic status and this drivetrain reached legend status a long time ago, especially having been rated at 245 horsepower by GM when new so as not to overshadow the Corvette's prowess. But we all know the truth!
