*1987 Ferrari Mondial Quattrovalvole Coupe*Ferrari has a long
lineage of four seat cars, nearly dating back to the founding of
the company. In the mid-1970s, it gained widespread notoriety for
its mid-engine V8 sports cars - but only twice in the company's
history has it combined the two. Debuting in 1980, the Mondial was
in many ways a stretched version of the 2-seat 308 and styled by
legendary Italian design house Pininfarina. In English, Mondial
translates to "Global" a name which was given to the car thanks to
meeting crash and emissions regulations worldwide - a big deal for
Ferrari at the time. This 1987 Mondial is from the final year of
the car's second and arguably best iteration - the 3.2
Quattrovalvole.Finished in the classic Ferrari color scheme of
Rosso Corsa over a tan leather interior, this Mondial currently
shows 74,189 miles on the odometer. The consignor of this car had
it in their collection based out of Nevada for a number of years,
after acquiring it out of Southern California. The Mondial 3.2
Quattrovalvole was produced in tandem with the 328 in the mid-late
1980s and received many of the styling updates that carried from
the 308 to the 328. Smoother front and rear facias with integrated
impact bumpers make the car look far sportier and highlight the
design far better than the early rubber units, and larger 5-spoke
wheels work perfectly proportionally with the shape. The interior is
very 1980s Ferrari with a thin 3-spoke Momo-sourced steering wheel,
leather on nearly every surface and the famed gated manual
transmission with its polished gate. Unlike most other Ferraris of
the era, this one allows you to fold the front seats forward and
fit two people in the rear - although it looks small back there, it
is just as spacious, if not more so, than the back of a similar era
911. Drop into the driver's seat and you are met with a beautiful
set of Veglia gauges including a 10,000 RPM tachometer with a 7,500
rpm redline, and a 180 MPH speedometer which are flanked by buttons
and warning lights.Of course, if there is one thing that matters
the most in a Ferrari, it's the powerplant. Situated transversely
behind the passenger compartment sits a 3.2-liter V8 with four
valves per cylinder, that comes straight out of the 328. With Bosch
K-Jetronic fuel injection and a Marelli Microplex ignition, the car
produces 266 horsepower and 244 lb-ft of torque while producing an
intoxicating sound every time you rev it out. Although the 3.2
Quattrovalvole is the second to last variant of the Mondial, many
people prefer it to the final "T" as you don't have to remove the
engine to replace the timing belt - which can be accessed on a lift
by removing the wheel well liner- dramatically dropping the price
of that service. Thankfully, this car's timing belt was replaced
just last year, and under current ownership has undergone
significant servicing with Park Place Boise to prepare it for sale
including a new clutch, flywheel and clutch hydraulic system, all
the seals have been replaced, an upgraded oil cooler was fitted and
the transfer case bearings were replaced. This engine is mated to a
5-speed manual gearbox and can sprint from 0-60 in just 6.8 seconds
and has a top speed in excess of 150 MPH.If you have always wanted
to own a Ferrari but felt held back by the lack of practicality,
the Mondial solves those issues and is tremendously fun to drive.
Although Ferrari did make other front-engined V12 cars with 2+2
seating, the Mondial offers the nimble handling dynamics of a 328,
with the space to fit your whole family. When that is paired with
comprehensive recent servicing, it becomes a truly appealing
proposition and a great entry point into the world of classic
