*1969 Lancia Fulvia 1.3S Rallye*Outside of dedicated car
enthusiasts, Lancia isn't a brand that is particularly well known
in the United States but their history is truly remarkable. Founded
in 1906 in Turin, Italy, Lancia was always on the cutting edge of
technology, building the first unibody chassis and the first
5-speed gearbox. But the part of Lancia's history that is where
things get really exciting is with rallying. Although the company
left the World Rally Championship in 1992, they still hold the
record for most Manufacturers' Championships with 10 victories
between 1974 and 1992.But in the days before the WRC, the car that
brought home dozens of rally victories for Lancia was the Fulvia.
The little front wheel drive car combined lightweight, an exciting
and innovative V4 engine and great traction, winning the 1972
International Championship for Manufacturers, along with every
Italian Rally Championship between 1965 and 1973 - save for one
year. The Fulvia is a rarely seen car in the United States, but
this Italian market 1969 Fulvia Rallye 1.3 is a stunning example
that has been cherished under the care of just three owners from
new. Under the care of the last owner, the car underwent
significant servicing to improve reliability and driving enjoyment,
making it a turn-key classic ready to be enjoyed.Of the many things
that makes this Fulvia special is, 1969 was the final year of
Lancia production before the company's acquisition by Fiat, at
which time, they began cutting costs and decontenting these special
cars. Because of this, the doors, trunk and hood are all made of
lightweight aluminum- which were all later replaced by steel
pieces. Finished in white, you can really appreciate the beautiful
shape of this car with its quad front lights and enormous glass
greenhouse. The white looks particularly striking when paired with
a set of gold Campagnolo wheels wrapped in new tires. The interior
is the sort of restrained elegance you would expect from a 1960s
Italian car, with two nicely padded low-back bucket seats in front
and a rear bench seat, all wrapped in tan leather. When you drop
into the driver's seat, you are met by a large, thin-rimmed 2-spoke
steering wheel, with an assortment of white-on-black Veglia gauges
behind it, inset within a beautiful polished wood dash panel.
Lancia has always been a company renowned for their build quality,
and the interior really shows that.Powering the Fulvia is a truly
unique 1.3-liter narrow-angle V4. Like the Volkswagen VR6 of the
1990s, both cylinder banks share a single head, making for a more
compact engine that can be placed in the exact right spot in the
engine bay. Breathing through a pair of Solex carburetors, the 1.3
Rallye was rated from the factory at 86 horsepower which was
achieved at 6,400 rpm. Although that isn't much by today's
standards, when Road & Track tested the Rallye in 1967, it tipped
the scales at just 2,090 lbs meaning the car feels much quicker
than you would expect. Under current ownership, this car received a
comprehensive mechanical freshening including all new hoses and
water pump, oil pan gasket and brake caliper rebuild. Power is sent
through a 4-speed manual to the front wheels. In that same Road &
Track test from 1969, they crowned the Fulvia as "...the best
handling front wheel drive car we've ever driven." and even still
that is applicable. If you're a fan of rally racing, or just looking
for a classic that is a bit off the beaten path, the Fulvia is an
outstanding choice. With its revvy engine, wonderful slick
gearchange and almost telepathic handling, the Fulvia makes every
drive a thrill and really feels like no other classic car out
there. When paired with the recent reconditioning and a host of OEM
parts that come with the car, this is not a car to miss.*Key
