"Now that the year old redesign of the Ford Mustang has some miles
on it, both Ford and the Mustang's obsessed clientele are ready for
a few important changes. A Mustang Cobra making more than 300 hp is
certainly welcome. And finally banished from the '96 Mustang GT is
the ancient overhead valve 5.0 liter V8, which-in various
guises-has powered Mustangs since their inception. Certain purists
may wail and gnash their teeth over this one, but it's a transition
we like." Car and Driver, September 1995
For consignment, a 1996 Ford Mustang GT convertible with a title
verified 83,614 actual miles. Sure, the car and its design may be
30 years old, but this pampered pony barely shows it. Other than
some typical age spots, this example is remarkably clean inside and
out!
Exterior
It's not true. In fact, it's a myth. Red cars do not get more
speeding tickets. However, drivers of red cars do! Joking here, but
those of us who preferred exteriors, like this stunning two stage
Rio Red, are a special breed, and maybe drive a bit more
"spirited". Meanwhile, the Mustang has a sporty profile and some
extra duct work that add to the aggression including two on the
hood and on each rear quarter panel and the end of a heritage body
line. The monochromatic back is where sportiness excels with a rear
wing over stamped bumper cover and twin exhaust pipes and the
contrasting tan canvas soft top is a nice feature that as we'll
see, matches the interior. 17-inch factory wheels carry 245/45R17
tires with a late 2024 date code, so there's an expense you won't
have to worry about for a while. The exterior is in excellent shape
and with close inspection, some imperfections appear. This includes
a squiggly scratch, some flex cracking, touches up scrapes, peeling
paint on a lower edge, rock chips, random scratches and chips, and
curb rash on the wheels.
Interior
Two tone plastic formed door panels include black over saddle and a
carpeted insert next to an embedded speaker and all have held up
well. Inside, tall saddle leather bucket seats occupy the front and
the driver's seat shows some wear and creasing but the passenger
unit and the rear 2+2 are in great shape. A leather wrapped
steering wheel presents nicely, fronting the black over saddle
dashboard, basic gauge cluster ahead, and A/C with an aftermarket
AM/FM/CD radio with AUX and USB in the center stack. The black
plastic of the dash cascades down to form the base for the
T-shifter which gives way to the saddle color molded center console
over tan carpet. Gray cloth cover panels dress the trunk and
present cleanly.
Drivetrain
The busy engine bay is also a clean one, housing the 4.6 SOHC V8,
fuel injected and rated at 215 horsepower. It's mated to a 4R70W
4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 8.8" Ford
axle with 3.27 gears and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
After 30 years, it's only natural that surface rust would develop
on the underside, and that's really the only thing detracting from
a perfectly clean bottom. Power disc brakes are employed at all
four wheels and dual exhaust runs through original equipment
muffler, fully intact and runs out to the polished, bevel cut tips
out back. Suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 4
link connecting things in back. We have pleasantly dry conditions
underneath!
Drive-Ability
Well, first, the driver's seat only has an inch of travel, but no
worries as we can reach the pedals. Once in and belted, we roll
this clean 'Stang onto the test loop where it does everything well,
from the decent acceleration to the straight tracking and very good
handling. Moreover, all functional items operate just as they
should and we're satisfied to trot this pony back to the mall.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Just a good, solid, clean and now vintage Mustang. Use it every day
or maintain it for car shows or do both! As they say with
convertibles, the sky's the limit. Are you a Mustang family? This
would make the ideal gift for that new driver in the household, and
the automatic caters to some of the younger crowd, and to us old
guys who are tired of shifting.
