Mercedes-Benz experienced something of a renaissance in the 1960s.
The company's ever-expanding model range carried with it an
enviable reputation for quality, with everything from dependable
taxicabs to stylish convertibles and luxury sedans. The only thing
lacking was an ultra-prestigious sedan to rival the likes of
Rolls-Royce or Bentley. In September of 1963 at the Frankfurt
International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz rectified that with the
all-new 600. As much a statement of engineering superiority as it
was a luxury car, the astonishing 600 had an overhead-camshaft,
fuel-injected, 6.3-liter V8 engine (the first V8 for Mercedes),
pneumatic suspension with variable ride control and height,
four-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes,
power-assisted steering, a full-vehicle hydraulic system, and
separate air conditioning systems for front and rear compartments.
Occupants enjoyed silent luxury and infinitely adjustable seating
powered by the same hydraulics that also operated the windows,
opened/closed the boot lid, and "soft closed" the doors.
Exquisitely engineered and highly sophisticated, it's only true
rival throughout its long production run were the Rolls-Royce
Phantom V and Phantom VI.
The 600 came in several configurations - based either on the 10.5
foot "short" wheelbase six-passenger sedan, or the long-wheelbase
Pullman limousine (with 4 or 6 doors) - a beast of a motorcar
surpassing twenty feet in length. The Pullman could accommodate up
to eight passengers, and was the preferred transport of Popes,
Captains of Industry, and the occasional Dictator. Despite its
considerable scale, the mighty 600 could reach 62mph in a little
under 10 seconds and top 124mph. They could even go around corners
remarkably well thanks to the sophisticated suspension. In total,
just 2,677 examples were made between 1963 and 1981, to include
2,190 four-door saloons, 428 Pullman limousines and 59 semi-open
Landaulettes.
This marvelous 4-door Pullman Limousine was delivered new on May
29th, 1970, via Mercedes-Benz USA. According to previous owners, it
is believed the first owner was Mr. Michael Pipella, an executive
at National Housewares, Inc-distributors of household products
under brands like Emdeko, makers of sewing machines, pots and pans,
and countless other products. A busy man of exquisite taste, he
configured his range-topping long wheelbase Pullman limousine with
additional options including air conditioning, an intercom system,
insulated glass, and a Becker Grand Prix radio.
The early history is not well known, but the Grosser Benz
eventually made its way to Japan, where it must have made quite a
statement on that country's narrow roads! The previous owner
acquired it from Japan and is said to have commissioned an
extensive stem-to-stern refurbishment between 2004 and 2014,
completed by the highly respected W100 and M100 experts at Star
Motors in Endicott, New York. While records are not present, the
work is said to have included extensive service to the air
suspension and hydraulic systems, an engine rebuild, brake work,
and so much more, reportedly topping $100,000 in mechanical work
alone.
Acquired by the most recent owner in 2019, the car shows
beautifully in its understated original shade of DB040 black.
Inside, brown leather graces the driver's compartment while rich
beige velour cloth covers the rear cabin. Lovely wood trim graces
the doors, dash, and division panel, and a period Sony television
and cooler count among the amenities. Additionally, a multi-point
camera system is discreetly installed to monitor the sides and rear
during maneuvering - or perhaps to watch out for political
rivals!
In its day, owning a Mercedes-Benz 600 was undeniable as a
statement of wealth and power, and it remains as imposing as ever.
Surely this is the only automobile equally loved by the likes of
Hugh Hefner, Pope Paul VI, and Saddam Hussein! Thanks to exhaustive
maintenance and specialist care, this wonderful example is prime
for enjoyment. Whether it be at your local Cars and Coffee, or on
your way to closing the business deal of a lifetime, this is a
truly special automobile in every manner.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
